It's looking very likely that Resident Evil Requiem won't be the only game in the long-running franchise that we'll be getting our teeth into this year. A new listing is showing a Mature 17+ rating for Resident Evil 5. But wait, Resident Evil 5 came out years ago, so of course, there's a rating, I hear you cry! Well, what's tasty about this one, is that it's listed for modern consoles, namely Xbox Series X/S.

According to the recent ratings from the ESRB, Resident Evil 5 has just received a Mature 17+ for Xbox Series S/X, which means we can expect a modern remake of the Chris-led action horror game. So can we expect to be spraying Wesley with more bullets than you would need to take down an army later this year? Let's get into it!

Are We Getting A Resident Evil 5 Remake?

Craving Capcom Confirmation

Third-person lends itself to action-oriented gameplay

The new ESRB rating all but confirms that we're getting a Resident Evil 5 remake. Sure, we still need confirmation from Capcom but considering their fairly consistent roadmap for Resi remakes, it seems very likely that we'll be taking down the infected in Kijuju some time this year. With PlayStation's massive State of Play coming later this week (tomorrow Feb 12), it wouldn't be shocking to assume we might get official confirmation from Capcom then.

Predictions for the upcoming State of Play generally have the internet coming up with crazy ideas, but a Resident Evil 5 remake seems like a logical and safe bet. From a sheer content perspective, we seem to be spoiled for choice when it comes to the Resident Evil franchise. With Resident Evil Requiem almost upon us and the new movie coming later this year from Weapons director Zach Cregger, there's never been a better time to be a Resident Evil fan.

A Resi 5 Remake Could Make Some Big Changes

Resi Reinvention For Chris Redfield

Capcom haven't been shy in the past about making changes to their originals. A prime example is their recent remake of Resident Evil 4. Not only did they overhaul the visuals, but they also changed the tone to be quite a bit darker and even changed the combat mechanics. The results were great and made for a fresh experience even for seasoned Resident Evil 4 fans.

The Resident Evil 5 remake may see similar changes. Resi 5 was the first in the franchise that leaned more into the action and away from the horror, which, for many, was a big mistake. If Capcom can ratchet up the tension and lean more into survival horror, then Chris and Sheva's adventure might be all the better for it. For the love of monkeys, at least cut out the boulder punching scene!

One thing is for certain. An all but confirmed Resident Evil 5 is a welcome addition to the franchise and 2026 is already shaping up to be an incredible year of content for Resi fans. Now might be the best time to revisit Resident Evil 2 before we're bombarded with new Resident Evil content to keep us busy. It's like the franchise is spreading like a virus or something?
