Even before San Diego Comic-Con’s surprise news that Robert Downey Jr. was back in the MCU as Doctor Doom, we’d heard rumblings that Marvel Studios was trying to bring back a few of its first Avengers for another team-up. Now, it might be one step closer.
The Wrap reports that Chris Evans has joined the cast of Avengers: Doomsday, but intriguingly, the outlet notes that there’s no solid details yet as to the nature of his role. That could, potentially, mean that Evans is not reprising his role as Steve Rogers, the first Captain America—but like Downey is returning in another role through multiversal shenanigans, as he did to reprise the role of Fantastic Four‘s Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine.
This wouldn’t be the first time Evans has been rumored to make a comeback after we saw Steve grow old and retire (via a little time stone trickery) in the climax of Avengers: Endgame, passing on the shield to Sam Wilson for Falcon and the Winter Soldier and next February’s Captain America: Brave New World. Evans previously publicly denied a report in 2021 that he’d be returning for a then-upcoming Marvel project, and in the wake of the aforementioned reports about Avengers returning being on the cards last year, he once again professed that his time in the MCU was done.
“No one’s spoken to me about it,” Evans told The View at the time. “And look, I would never say never, but I really—I’m very protective. It’s a very precious role to me, so it would have to be just right.”
Perhaps Evans has finally been offered something just right. Or perhaps a large, large amount of money. Maybe even both!
