Amazon Prime's Red, White & Royal Blue took the world by storm in 2023 and now Red, White & Royal Blue 2 is in the works. The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Casey McQuiston, which concerns the son of the President of the United States falling for an heir to the British throne. The high-stakes world of international politics isn't the typical backdrop for an LGBTQ+ romance story, but Red, White & Royal Blue amped up its romantic dramedy by using the stuffiness of politics as the ultimate foil for the heroes' love story.

Red, White & Royal Blue's most romantic moments had audiences swooning, and it quickly became one of the most-watched original movies that Prime Video has ever produced. Anchored by the stellar performances of Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine, the movie balanced its over-the-top setting with heartfelt romance. Though aspects of the story were intentionally cheeky, Red, White & Royal Blue added a new layer to LGBTQ+ romance while still staying close to the core tenets of the genre. Now, less than a year later, Red, White & Royal Blue 2 is coming soon.

The Sequel Is Announced

The overwhelming success of the original movie made a sequel seem like a foregone conclusion, and the latest news confirms that Red, White & Royal Blue 2 is happening (via Variety). The announcement came less than a year after the debut of the 2023 hit, and was made despite the fact that author Casey McQuiston hasn't published a sequel. Though many details of the sequel are still unknown, it has also been confirmed that original stars Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine will return to reprise their roles.

Another Royal Romance Is Coming Soon

Red, White & Royal Blue 2 is officially confirmed, and Amazon's decision to greenlight a sequel is far from surprising. Red, White & Royal Blue hit #1 on Prime's charts back in 2023, and the critical success was also a nice bump for Amazon's streaming service. Sequel talks began almost immediately after the movie's resounding debut, and less than a year later they were officially announced by Amazon.

Since the announcement in May 2024, no other details have surfaced, and it's highly likely that the movie is still in the development phase. Since there's no book to be adapted, it might take a bit long to craft a new story for the next movie, which could further delay the sequel's release.

Red, White & Royal Blue premiered on July 22, 2023.

The Original Stars Return For The Sequel

Along with the announcement that the sequel was officially happening, Amazon also announced that the original movie's leads will be back in Red, White & Royal Blue 2. That means Nicholas Galitzine will return as the stuffy but lovable Prince Henry alongside Taylor Zakhar Perez as Alex, the care-free son of the President of the United States of America. Though no other returns have been revealed yet, it's highly likely that Uma Thurman will reprise her role as Alex's mom, President Ellen Claremont.

Since nothing is known about the sequel's story, it stands to reason that the movie will introduce new characters that weren't seen in the original. However, it's impossible to guess who those new characters will be until more information surfaces regarding the follow-up.

The potential Red, White & Royal Blue 2 story could see how living their lives out and in the public eye might come with its own set of conflicts

Much of the original Red, White & Royal Blue story involves the main characters developing feelings for one another and having to hide their relationship, but also how that affects their high-profile families. Red, White & Royal Blue gives Alex and Henry their happy ending, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t more story to tell. The potential Red, White & Royal Blue 2 story could see how living their lives out and in the public eye might come with its own set of conflicts. An established relationship instead of a coming-out story would be refreshing for a queer rom-com.

Exploring how the relationship is recieved by the world at large is a prospect ripe with possible conflict, or the movie could continue the fuzzy and romantic approach while leaving the dark realities of hatred and bigotry behind. Many romantic sequels often put the relationship in danger, and Alex and Henry could see the first real bumps on their road to a long and healthy relationship in Red, White & Royal Blue 2.
