Red Dead Redemption 2 Players Can Finally Explore Mexico On September 16

With GTA 6 on the way, Red Dead Redemption 2 is obviously not a huge priority at Rockstar Games right now. Mind you, that doesn't mean there aren't any reasons for all you virtual cowboys to get excited. Despite the 2018 masterpiece's vast open world teasing Mexico for all these years, actually trying to cross the border into the country has always been impossible. Until now.

Previously, attempting to get into Mexico in Red Dead Redemption 2 involved the use of a glitch of some kind. The upshot was that, even if you made it into the country, there wasn't anything there to do besides ride around and admire the dusty scenery. There have also been a few Mexico mods over the years, but none that have given players a substantial amount of new things to do. This is set to change on September 16 with the arrival of Nuevo Paraiso: The Forgotten Frontier.

As pointed out by Synth Potato on X, this is an ambitious new fan-made map expansion that allows players to fully explore the Nuevo Paraiso region. This is, of course, the area of Mexico players traveled to in the original Red Dead Redemption, but modders have restored it to work in Red Dead Redemption 2, complete with a seamless 1907 setting, populated towns, random events, wildlife, and other surprises.

"We're working to ensure the mod not only looks good, but also feels real," the mod description reads. "We want to reflect the oppression, despair, and social tension experienced by many Mexicans during that year. Not as mere decoration, but as environmental storytelling, so the players will understand why the Revolution began, and how that conflict gives meaning to the events of Red Dead Redemption 1."

It continues, "Discover new secrets, new secondary missions, and unique locations that expand the game world without losing its core identity. Every detail has been carefully considered to perfectly match the atmosphere, lighting, and tone of Red Dead Redemption 2, offering a seamless and coherent experience that stays true to the canon. With new areas to explore, adapted mechanics, and a completely recreated world, this mod will encourage everyone to return to Mexico and rediscover how the state was like in the year 1907."

Obviously, this mod will only be available to Red Dead Redemption 2 players on PC, since the console versions of the game don't offer any built-in mod support, but it'll be fascinating to see this one in action when it releases on September 16. This might just be the most ambitious Red Dead Redemption 2 mod we've ever seen, and a wonderful sign the game is still aliver after all these years.
