James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.

Red Dead Redemption 2 might be firmly in the rearview mirror at this point in proceedings, but the game still holds a fascination for millions that no other release has been able to replicate. In fairness, Rockstar's sprawling Western epic really is a game like no other, and it feasibly provides hundreds of hours of fun, without having to do the same thing twice.

That makes it all the more galling that we never got a proper single-player DLC for the game, which would have lent itself readily to another runthrough of Undead Nightmare, if nothing else. Happily, in lieu of that, we can take some comfort in the diligent updates that the game's multiplayer modes have received over the years.

Now, the latest of those is live, and there are plenty of exciting rewards for players to get their hands on.

In case you haven't spotted all the plastic decorations in your local supermarket, spooky season is officially upon us, and Red Dead Online is currently joining in the fun. As part of that, players can participate in Fear of the Dark, a limited-time Halloween PvP Showdown Mode. Within that, two players serve as Night Stalkers, fast and powerful monsters whose only role in life is to kill the other six players in the lobby.

It's a load of fun in its own right, but there is plenty going on besides that's worth enjoying before the end of the month. First off, there are plenty of spectacular bonuses for all the stuff you would usually do online, with the full list of included activities as follows:

  • 3X RDO$, Role XP and XP on Naturalist Sample Sales
  • 3X RDO$, Gold and XP on All Hallows' Call to Arms
  • 3X RDO$ and XP on Featured Series
  • 4X RDO$, Gold and XP on Strange Tales of the West Telegram Missions

You can also assemble a free community-inspired outfit by browsing the catalogue or visiting any of the participating tailors. The items you can grab at no cost includes:

  • Worn Flop Hat
  • Leather Duster
  • Laborer Overshirt (Female) or Lautnip Shirt (Male)
  • Leather Pants
  • Military Half Chaps
  • Leather Gloves
  • Bandana
  • Worn Roper Boots

At the same time, you can even get fun rewards just for playing the game, including the Red Fernwater Coat, which you'll find in your collection simply for logging in this month.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was such a monumentally successful game that it would have been difficult to imagine at the time that it could serve as the last game in the series. It was always intended to be a closed, two-part narrative, and with all the attention on GTA VI for a while to come yet, it will be interesting to see if Rockstar returns to the well of the West, no matter how long it might take them.
