How Rebecca Gayheart Celebrated Daughter Billie’s 16th Birthday After Eric Dane's Death
Eric Dane’s loved ones are still grappling with his death.
One month after the Grey’s Anatomy alum died following his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), his ex Rebecca Gayheart admitted their family is “still in a state of shock.”
“I just want to thank everybody for being so kind to us during the last couple of years,” the Jawbreaker star—mom to Billie, 16, and Georgia, 14, with Eric—told Variety in an interview published March 11. “It’s been challenging and meaningful, and people are kind.”
Indeed, in the days since confirming his passing, Rebecca admitted that Eric’s community has been an incredible source of support, adding, “They’ve been holding me and the girls up the last two weeks.”
“I don’t think they’re going anywhere,” she continued. “I think they’re in it for the long haul. Hollywood gets a bad rap. That kind of makes me mad, because we have a lovely community of people, and I’m so grateful for them.”
But it’s a gratitude that goes both ways. In the weeks since his passing, many of Eric’s costars have spoken out about how much he meant to them.
“We hit it off because there was never really any competition,” Patrick Dempsey, who starred alongside Eric in Grey’s Anatomy for seven seasons, said during an interview with Virgin Radio UK Feb. 20. “It was just this wonderful mutual respect. He's wickedly intelligent. I'm always going to remember those moments of fun that we had together and celebrate the joy that he did bring to people's lives.”
As the Enchanted actor emphasized, “The real loss is for us who don’t have him here anymore.”

“Working with him was an honor,” Sam wrote in a tribute. “Being his friend was a gift. Eric’s family is in our prayers. May his memory be for a blessing.”
