Rohan Naahar is a Weekend News Writer for Collider. From Francois Ozon to David Fincher, he'll watch anything once.

He has covered everything from Marvel to the Oscars, and Marvel at the Oscars. He also writes obsessively about the box office, charting the many hits and misses that are released weekly, and how their commercial performance shapes public perception. In his time at Collider, he has also helped drive diversity by writing stories about the multiple Indian film industries, with a goal of introducing audiences to a whole new world of cinema.

The market for star-studded, studio-funded genre movies aimed at adult audiences is visibly diminishing. Movies that fit this category typically debut directly on streaming these days — case in point, The Rip, starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. However, the recently released film Crime 101 seems to be going against the grain. Although it's an Amazon MGM release, which means that its fate will ultimately be decided by its performance on Prime Video, the film has held its own theatrically. It is on the verge of hitting the $50 million mark worldwide, thanks to critical acclaim and audience support. It will need to do far better if it wants to stand any chance of recouping its reported $90 million budget and turning a profit. For now, it can celebrate the achievement of having overtaken one of the most notorious crime thrillers of the last decade.

Directed by Bart Layton, Crime 101 stars Chris Hemsworth, alongside Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, and Corey Hawkins. The movie has been compared to the films of Michael Mann and is currently sitting at a "Certified Fresh" 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator's consensus reads, "Crime 101 has studied the greats of L.A. Noir closely and shows its homework with sleek action set pieces and vivid characterizations, receiving top marks and graduating near the top of its class." The movie follows a thief and a cop locked in a cat-and-mouse chase in Los Angeles. Incidentally, both Hemsworth and Ruffalo have worked with Mann in the past; Hemsworth starred in Blackhat while Ruffalo played a supporting role in Collateral.

Here's the Critically Panned Thriller Overtaken by 'Crime 101'

With around $45 million at the global box office so far, Crime 101 has overtaken the $43 million lifetime global haul of The Snowman. Based on a book by Jo Nesbø, the movie was directed by the otherwise-acclaimed Tomas Alfredson and released to poor reviews in 2017. The filmmaker later complained that he couldn't complete principal photography on the movie, and has since disowned the project. Starring Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, Val Kilmer, J.K. Simmons, and Charlotte Gainsbourg, the movie holds a 7% score on Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, "A mystery that feels as mashed together and perishable as its title, The Snowman squanders its bestselling source material as well as a top-notch ensemble cast." You can watch Crime 101 in theaters. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
