Real Madrid assigns iconic No. 9 jersey to Endrick

Some jersey numbers carry weight that goes beyond fabric and thread. At Real Madrid, the No. 9 is one of them.

On August 8, 2025, the club officially handed the number to Endrick, the 19-year-old Brazilian forward who spent his debut season at the Santiago Bernabéu wearing the comparatively anonymous No. 16. The upgrade is a statement, not just an administrative shuffle.

The number became available after Kylian Mbappé moved to the No. 10 shirt in July 2025, creating a vacancy that Real Madrid chose to fill with its youngest attacking investment rather than a marquee arrival.

A number with a lineage

Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Ronaldo Nazário all wore No. 9 at Real Madrid before Endrick got anywhere near it.

Endrick joined Real Madrid from Palmeiras in July 2024, completing a transfer that had been agreed years earlier when the Brazilian was still a teenager. He spent the 2024/25 campaign in the squad wearing No. 16, getting minutes and learning the system.

At Palmeiras, Endrick was already operating as a decisive player in high-pressure moments, including a memorable goal for Brazil at the 2024 Olympics. His physical profile, combining pace, strength, and an instinct for positioning in the penalty area, maps reasonably well onto what the No. 9 role at Real Madrid has historically demanded.
