Reacher Season 4's Massive Villain Twist Explained

This article contains major spoilers for Reacher season 4, episode 4.Reacher season 4's storyline seemed fairly straightforward for the first three episodes. Its primary hook came from its overarching mysteries surrounding the truth behind Anna Merick's death. However, in the ending moments of episode 4, Reacher season 4 drops a shocking twist that confirms there is more to some of its new characters than meets the eye.

One of the newer additions to Reacher season 4's cast has been a character named Lila. She initially tried to acquire Anna's hard drive from Jack Reacher and claimed that she was only trying to find her estranged father, Congressman John Sampson, for a bone marrow match to treat her cancer. When Reacher found no evidence of her relationship with Sampson, she cleverly pivoted her lie.

As romantic developments brewed between her and Reacher, she claimed to be an investigative journalist who hopes to expose Sampson's complicity in military atrocities and covert war crimes in Indonesia. She even asks Reacher to take care of himself when he sets out to find answers. However, in episode 4, a final twist reveals that Lila has been lying all along.

She is the real villain this season.

Who Lila Really Is In Reacher Season 4

In Reacher season 4, episode 4's final arc, Jacob Merrick goes to the morgue to see his dead nephew's body. When the examiner reveals that his nephew was killed using an exotic knife called a karambit, which is a distinctly curved weapon tied to the Indonesian martial arts of Pencak Silat, he instantly connects the dots and realizes Lila is the murderer.

A parallel scene follows Lila and Amisha in which they arrive at their hotel room and discover that their men have been killed. Soon, some hitmen emerge and ask them for the drive. Realizing that the men are carrying only knives to ensure no one hears them, the two women unveil their own weapons of choice: the karambit.

Jack Reacher rushes to their room in the episode's final scene, believing that their lives are in danger. To his surprise, he only finds the dead bodies of the men who were hired to kill Lila and Amisha. This confirms that Lila and Amisha killed all the men and are far more dangerous and deeply involved in the conspiracy than Reacher realized.

It establishes the two women as the primary villains of the series who played Reacher and convinced him to work for them. While their exact role in the conspiracy remains a mystery, it is evident that they, too, want their hands on the hard drive for all the wrong reasons.

Since the karambit knife marks were found on Anna's son's body, Lila and Amisha were the ones who kidnapped, tortured, and killed him to force Anna to steal the memory drive.

There Are Still Other Villains To Uncover In Reacher Season 4

Many mysterious factions and agencies at play in Reacher season 4. So far, the show has not even revealed the true intentions of the men who tried to attack Lila and Amisha at the hotel in the final scene of episode 4. Reacher season 4 has also not revealed who hired the man who attempted to kill the Alan Ritchson character on the subway station in episode 4.

The real reason behind the involvement of so many law enforcement forces has also not been disclosed. However, several clues, so far, make it hard not to believe that Sampson, too, has some skeletons in his closet.

Who Lila Is In Lee Child's Gone Tomorrow Book (& Why Season 4 Will Be Different)

In Lee Child's Gone Tomorrow, Lila Hoth is revealed to be the main antagonist. However, instead of tying her origins to Indonesia, the book traces her story back to Afghanistan and the Soviet–Afghan War. She is revealed to be an extremist who was raised around a lot of violence and combat in war-torn Afghanistan.

Like Amisha in the show, Lila's book counterpart also has an accomplice named Svetlana, who also poses as her mother to deceive Jack Reacher. Even in the book, both Amisha and Svetlana are portrayed as ruthless operatives who force Susan Mark (the book's equivalent to Anna Merrick) to steal the memory drive by abducting and torturing her son.

The central memory drive in the book contains a compromising photograph from 1983. It shows John Sansom (Sampson in the show) standing alongside Osama bin Laden during the Afghan resistance against the Soviets. Since the Jack Reacher book was published in 2009, its story thematically aligned more with post-9/11 fears and paranoia.

Since those themes would be relatively less relevant for the present day, Reacher season 4 has seemingly shifted its backstory to covert American military operations in Southeast Asia. It also makes sense for the show to not riff on real world events to avoid any potential controversy. This explains why it ties Sampson's history to a fictional General Putra.

Lila Is Different To Any Other Villain In Prime Video's Reacher

Lila Hoth is the first villain in Reacher to actually get inside the Alan Ritchson character's head. All previous villains merely tried to scare Reacher and his allies by sending mercenaries to kill him. Hoth carefully exploits Reacher’s chivalric streak and makes him believe she is just another innocent and powerless player in the overarching conspiracy.

Since Reacher's previous love interests were female law enforcers who helped him solve the central case, even as a viewer, it is hard not to be convinced that Lila is on his side. The episode 4 twist, however, proves that as smart as Reacher may seem, he, too, can be deceived.

Although Reacher season 4 does not walk through the entire action scene where Lila and Amisha kill the men in their hotel room, it confirms they are expert martial artists. This seems to set the stage for a brutal fight between them and Reacher in season 4's final arc.

For the first time, the Alan Ritchson character will have to overpower one of his own former love interests to save the day in Reacher, and it will not be an easy feat.
