Reacher proves as much, with the Prime Video show adapting several books from the series out of release order. The first season, for instance, is based on the first Jack Reacher book, but the second installment is based on the 11th of Lee Child's novels. Season 3 jumped back to the seventh book, before Reacher season 4's cast was filled out using the 13th. Regardless of the order, one thing is clear: Reacher mostly remains faithful to whichever Lee Child book is being adapted.
Interestingly, though, the Prime Video franchise is about to change that, to an extent. Reacher season 4's book links will be the last until season 5 is released, with a spin-off being nestled between them that isn't tied to any specific Lee Child story. That story is Neagley, a story focusing on the titular character, one of Reacher's closest allies. Unlike each of Reacher's main seasons, Neagley is not based on a pre-existing book, instead being an original mystery created by Prime Video's writing team, marking a first for the franchise.
Neagley Has Been A Part Of The Reacher Universe Since 2002
Despite the lack of a Lee Child book to serve as the basis for Neagley, the latter will likely still take cues from the Jack Reacher books. After all, Neagley has existed as a character since 2002, being introduced in the book Without Fail. Since then, Neagley has appeared in five of Lee Child's stories. Reacher changes this somewhat, with Neagley being part of the TV universe despite not being part of some of the books being adapted.
Nonetheless, Neagley is still a central character to the novels. With this in mind, it is likely that Prime Video's Neagley will include elements of the titular character's book background, on top of what has already been shown in Reacher thus far. What makes all of this even more interesting is that, unlike Reacher, which has been based on pre-existing books, Neagley will only further change the status quo of Prime Video's franchise...
Neagley Will Be The Focus Of A Lee Child Book Set To Release In 2027
In a flip on the typical process of adapting a book to screen, Neagley will tell the character's own story on TV before a book is released a year later. Likely influenced by the character's popularity in Reacher and her own spin-off, Lee Child is currently writing a book centered on Neagley, which is set to be released in 2027. The book will be titled Zero Margin and will be released in March 2027. Child wrote the book alongside author Yasmin Angoe.
The premise of Zero Margin involves Neagley receiving an encrypted call, leading to an investigation into the kidnapping of her former commanding officer. This differs from the story of the upcoming Neagley show, which instead focuses on the character's murder investigation of a friend from her past. Regardless of the differences, it is clear that Child has been inspired by Neagley's presence in the Reacher show, even leading to a spin-off being crafted before a book of his own could be written, not the other way around as usual.
