Based on Lee Child's highly successful action thriller series featuring the stoic and towering Jack Reacher, the Reacher TV series has quickly become one of Prime Video's flagship shows. While Rotten Tomatoes audiences preferred the first season as the action show hooked viewers in the first 10 minutes, critics have given the show's second and third seasons impressive 98% positive scores. Each season of Reacher takes the titular character to a new place, with a different main cast, though fan favorites like Oscar Finlay have made cameos.

Season 3 of Reacher ended with a sad twist, the promise of freedom for one of the best characters, and, just like the previous two seasons, a new location for Reacher, who takes off on a motorcycle for a destination that was unknown to viewers at the time the season ended. Now, season 4 of Reacher is officially confirmed by Prime, with the iconic character returning to screens on August 12, and another entry from the franchise following shortly afterward.

Reacher Season 4 Will Be Quickly Followed By More From The Franchise

Maria Sten dressed up as Frances Neagley in Reacher season 2

Just a month after season 4 of Reacher arrives, Prime Video will release the first season of a spinoff centered on one of Reacher's best supporting characters, Frances Neagley. Played by Maria Sten, Neagley quickly became a fan favorite for her friendship with Reacher. She is not only a voice of reason and a loyal friend to Reacher, but a ruthless and talented agent in her own right, with season 3 giving viewers a stealth preview of what a season of Neagley could look like.

Frances Neagley is named after a fan who won an auction at Bouchercon to have a Jack Reacher book character named after her.

Maria Sten will be reprising her role as Neagley, and it is highly likely that Alan Ritchson could also make a cameo appearance. According to Variety, Neagley "puts herself on a dangerous path to uncover a menacing evil" as she investigates the death of a beloved friend who has been killed in a suspicious car accident. While this sounds like the beginning of Reacher season 2, in which his old military friends were being killed off, it is almost certain that Neagley will take a different direction to ensure the two series feel different while appealing to the Reacher fanbase.

Which Books Reacher Season 4 & Neagley Season 1 Are Based On

For a character with so much impact on the TV show, Neagley has a surprisingly small role in Lee Child's Jack Reacher novel series. She makes cameo appearances in several of the books, including Bad Luck and Trouble, which was the basis for season 2, but does not appear in any of the other books that have been adapted into the Reacher TV show. The Neagley series is not based on a book, but is an original story written for the spinoff.

On the other hand, Reacher's fourth season is based on the book Gone Tomorrow. As most of the books are standalone stories, the show has adapted the books out of order, focusing on fan favorites, like Killing Floor. Set in New York, with a disturbing and ominous opening arc, and featuring one of the novel series' most terrifying villains yet, Gone Tomorrow is the thirteenth book in Lee Child's series, and another fan favorite.

Reacher Continues To Be One Of Amazon's Prime Franchises

Despite Reacher's two latest seasons failing to live up to the popularity of the explosive first season, the series has remained one of Prime Video's best action TV shows. The casting has been constantly excellent, with a couple of Easter eggs, like Robert Patrick's "Sarah Connor" quip, that are fun to spot rather than being distracting, and the pacing ensures each episode is both tense and action-packed. While it is generally a faithful adaptation in terms of tone, the TV series has made some necessary changes from the Reacher books, giving Ritchson more lines and speaking through another character.

This, of course, is Neagley. With the book's version of Jack Reacher being a man of few words, and "Reacher said nothing" being a common phrase, this would not translate well to the screen. Reacher needed a person to talk to, who did not feel forced into the show. Neagley was the perfect character, with such a defined personality and presence that she was compelling in her own right, as well as a sounding board. This decision has led to the Reacher franchise expanding, with fans getting an exciting double helping in the coming months.
