Reacher Meets Law & Order In Prime Video's Best Detective Show

While Prime Video’s best detective franchise might predate Reacher, the show still manages to perfectly blend its premise with the setup of the Law & Order franchise. As Prime Video’s Reacher prepares to release both Reacher season 4 and its first spinoff, Neagley, it is becoming clearer than ever that the hit action thriller show is a full-blown pop culture phenomenon. It only took four years and three seasons for star Alan Ritchson’s Prime Video series to spawn an entire shared universe thanks to its critical popularity and record viewing numbers.

Reacher is so popular that the show has even been suggested as the best replacement for Prime Video’s earlier flagship series The Boys, another R-rated action thriller that wrapped up with its series finale in May 2026. However, for all the successes of Reacher, the show can’t quite compete with the Law & Order franchise yet. With seven different shows that boast over 70 seasons of TV between them, this police procedural is a network TV juggernaut and has been since the start of its run.

As such, it might surprise readers to realize that an earlier Prime Video action thriller franchise managed to mix the police procedural format of the Law & Order franchise with the grizzled antihero character study approach of Reacher. Reacher is adapted from author Lee Child’s book series of the same name, an ongoing set of bestsellers with over 30 novels to its name. However, Prime Video’s earlier detective drama Bosch is based on an even bigger book franchise.

Bosch Blends Reacher’s Antihero Protagonist With Law & Order’s Procedural Format

Adapted from The Lincoln Lawyer author Michael Connelly’s novel series of the same name, Bosch debuted in February 2014. Lasting seven seasons and 68 episodes, the original series followed Titus Welliver’s eponymous LAPD homicide detective Harry ‘Hieronymous’ Bosch as he hunted down serial killers throughout the Hollywood Hills. Plagued by personal demons but undeniably brilliant at his job, the troubled detective also uprooted corruption within the police department in between catching killers.

Bosch proved so popular that the show spawned a sequel series, Bosch: Legacy, that ran for an additional three seasons until 2025. Before viewers could miss the franchise, the spinoff Ballard expanded the world of the series. Like Reacher’s upcoming spinoff Neagley, Ballard focused on a female supporting character from the original show who was a longtime ally to its title character.

Maggie Q’s Detective Renée Ballard spent Ballard season 1 solving cold cases, with occasional assistance from Welliver’s Bosch. The upcoming prequel Bosch: Start of Watch is set to star Gotham’s Cameron Monaghan as a young version of the detective investigating his first cases, although Welliver won’t appear in the series since he is busy with his period crime drama The Westies and season 4 of The Night Agent.

Bosch Paved The Way For Prime Video’s Reacher Franchise

The Bosch franchise’s focus on a lone wolf detective shares a lot in common with Reacher’s winning formula, although it is worth noting that Welliver’s character is both more vocal and more of a team player than Bosch is in the original books. However, the enduring popularity of this series also, in turn, owes a debt to the creative influence of the Law & Order franchise.

Bosch borrowed its focus on a group of cops working together to catch criminals from the Law & Order franchise, much like Reacher borrowed elements of its ultra-competent, haunted, and reserved titular protagonist from Bosch. Thus, one could argue the Bosch franchise’s success proved Reacher could work on Prime Video, while the enduring popularity of the Law & Order franchise and its many cop show spinoffs was, in turn, what made the Connelly adaptation possible in the first place.
