rezero season 3 episode 3 subaru horrified

Re:Zero -Starting Life In Another World- raised the stakes significantly in the third episode of its third season, "Gorgeous Tiger", and it's already establishing itself as the season's most exciting isekai. Fans of the series will already be well-aware of Re:Zero's ability to suddenly and inexplicably turn the tables. Subaru, Emilia, and the others find themselves in uncharted waters as the threat level of the Sin Archbishops rises to unprecedented heights. The episode arrives at the heels of Re:Zero's impressive sleight of hand in the first two episodes.

In the first episode, "Theatrical Malice", viewers are led to believe that the season will center on the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony before the rug is pulled out from under them with the Archibishop of Wrath. Viewers then saw Subaru's repeated efforts to thwart the Archbishop of Wrath's massacre in "A Showdown of Ice and Fire", where Re:Zero's singular heroine Emilia steals the spotlight. She's suddenly kidnapped in the episode's conclusion, and the third episode builds on these electrifying events in a way that makes Re:Zero's third season the tensest, most thrilling isekai of Fall 2024.

Re:Zero's Latest Episode Sees Several Archbishops Join The Fight

By The End Of The Episode, Four Faces Promise Destruction

The pivotal scene of the episode is without a doubt the fight between Subaru and Cornea Regulus, the latter having just appeared at the end of the second episode to kidnap Emilia. Countless analyses have already emerged about this decisive battle which would, in the end, leave Subaru bleeding out on the ground to be healed by Beatrice. The witch cultists' onslaught feels unstoppable as the empathy link from the Archbishop of Wrath leads the crowd to suffer the same leg injury as Subaru.

Most notable about the sequence, though, is the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony also making a terrifying appearance. The end of the episode sees the Archbishop of Lust show up, too. With four high-ranking witch cultists now in the fold, the city of Priestella (to which Emilia and company had traveled for a meeting with Anastasia, another royal candidate) has far more threats to its safety than anybody could have guessed. In other words, the third episode of Re: Zero's third season ups the danger considerably.

The fact is that this situation is, altogether, horrifying. Re:Zero has primed its fan base to find both excitement and horror in such a formidable challenge. It's horrifying because the fans are always keenly aware of Subaru's relative powerlessness, something making him one of isekai's most compelling protagonists. It's exciting, though, because Re:Zero has demonstrated time and time again that its viewers are in incredibly capable hands; its most devastating moments are its most memorable, and its most enduring scenes arise from backdrops which forecast this same kind of inevitable tragedy.

At play in the episode, as well, is the enveloping of Garfiel, a long-time supporting character, into the overall drama. In previous seasons, side characters have held primary importance, but the third season has set a new standard for their involvement by prominently featuring their character development and backstories. The emotional investment by viewers in Re: Zero's secondary and tertiary characters is setting a high bar for isekai that few other series will achieve.

Re:Zero is a mature isekai series that has attracted legions of fans, naturally begging the question of what other anime series are like it?

In Re:Zero's 53rd episode, Garfiel meets his birth mother (who is entirely unaware that he's her son). The subplot is touching overall, but it also speaks more broadly to a clever narrative decision on Re: Zero's part. The third season seems, so far, to be establishing tension on all fronts—with side characters like Garfiel, Reinhard, and Beatrice all getting more screen time than ever—in preparation for a full-scale physical and psychological offensive against the witch cultists.

Re: Zero Fixes My Biggest Issue With Isekai, & The Latest Episode Proves Why

A recurring problem isekai have is underemphasizing their supporting characters, but Re:Zero sets itself apart.

Those who are familiar with Re:Zero's particular brand of tension-building will be all too aware of why the developments of the supporting cast as well as the sudden appearance of several Archbishops is a signpost for horrifying excellence. Re:Zero doesn't play its plot straight; it always, until the winning sweep, dons a poker face. The seemingly disconnected threads exploring characters like Garfiel and Reinhard alongside the spontaneous appearance of new enemies aren't just clever storytelling.

They're actually two arms of a narrative tactic. Re:Zero is strategically congealing distinct personalities, fears, and hopes into a loosely defined but highly volatile compound. This ability is what makes Re Zero so unique. Its disarmament and false truces are really subversive traps. "Gorgeous Tiger", is noteworthy precisely because, as it lines up a more oppressive wall of enemies than the series has ever seen in one place, it shows Re:Zero taking a new, risky approach by diverging from its normal narrative centers (e.g., Subaru and Emilia) is the buildup to its most excruciating moment yet.
