The witch cultists' onslaught feels unstoppable as the empathy link from the Archbishop of Wrath leads the crowd to suffer the same leg injury as Subaru.
Most notable about the sequence, though, is the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony also making a terrifying appearance. The end of the episode sees the Archbishop of Lust show up, too. With four high-ranking witch cultists now in the fold, the city of Priestella (to which Emilia and company had traveled for a meeting with Anastasia, another royal candidate) has far more threats to its safety than anybody could have guessed. In other words, the third episode of Re: Zero's third season ups the danger considerably.
The fact is that this situation is, altogether, horrifying. Re:Zero has primed its fan base to find both excitement and horror in such a formidable challenge. It's horrifying because the fans are always keenly aware of Subaru's relative powerlessness, something making him one of isekai's most compelling protagonists.
