The titular protagonist of the Ranma 1/2 series is known for being a brash and thoughtless warrior who tends not to think before acting. While well-intentioned, his bravado and massive ego have caused issues for not only him but the people around him on countless occasions. Episode #5 of the remake series is a perfect example, as his rivalry with Ryoga cost Akane her precious long hair.
Despite how devastating this occurrence might have been, it gave the series a perfect opportunity to develop the growing relationship between Ranma and Akane. This entry of the anime features one of the protagonist’s first true displays of emotion, revealing how much he cares for his fiancée.
Ranma's Brash Attitude Cannot Hide His True Feelings
His Care and Love For Akane Are Evident For The Audience
In episode #5 of the Ranma 1/2 remake, the protagonist is challenged to a battle by his former friend Ryoga. Ryoga’s deep hatred for his rival led him to go all out during the battle, not caring about who could get injured. The reckless behavior exhibited by both parties ended up causing Akane’s hair to be cut almost entirely, an accident that brought the match to a halt. Ryoga was extremely ashamed of his behavior, claiming that he never intended for something like this to happen. Ranma, on the other hand, was more concerned about his fiancée’s wellbeing.
He spent the rest of the episode trying to apologize to Akane, making sure that she was okay, and helping in any way he could. His behavior was unlike anything fans had seen from him throughout the series so far. Ranma kept his bravado and mean comments to a minimum, instead preferring to show his fiancée a kinder, more understanding side. This was the first time since their engagement was announced that Genma’s son did not try to push Akane away with insults or hurtful jokes.

The Show Proves The Tendo Family Has Helped Ranma Grow
They Are Helping Him Break The Toxic Traits His Father Taught Him
As a child, Ranma spent most of his time traveling the world with his father as his sole company, as Genma wanted to learn as many techniques as possible to remain strong. The duo never stayed in the same spot for long, preventing the young martial artists from making any significant connections. Worse of all, his father was far from being an ideal role model for such an impressionable mind, making Ranma believe that showing emotions was a weakness he could not afford.
Genma would also poison his mind by stating that his son should be a "man among men" and that any kind of girly behavior would make him weak. When Ranma arrived at the Tendo household, he had these horrible beliefs ingrained into his mind. Yet, being surrounded by caring and nurturing individuals like Kasumi, Soun, and even Akane, has helped him understand the error of his ways. Episode #5 is an excellent example of Ranma leaving behind the harmful teachings of his father.
He accepted his mistake, tried to make amends, and gave Akane the compassion and support she needed at the time.
