EXCLUSIVE: Radial Entertainment has acquired North American rights to sci-fi action picture Heavens: The Boy and His Robot in one of its first announced acquisitions since its creation last July.
Prestige International Pictures (PIP), the L.A.-based film sales, financing, and production company headed by Carlos Rincon, which launched last Cannes, is handling sales on the title.
The Singapore-produced movie has been enjoying success at film festivals including Bucheon (BIFAN), Fantasporto, Fantasia, and is to make its U.S. premiere Cinequest next month.
The family-friendly film is billed as Singapore’s first live-action feature in the mecha genre, a genre of Japanese manga and anime that features or focuses on mechanical innovations such as robots and cyborgs.
It revolves around a struggling young pilot, Kai, and his fighter mecha, a giant robot named Little Dragon. Set against a backdrop of epic galactic warfare, it follows Kai’s dream of joining the Mecha Corps to bring peace to a war-torn world and the unique friendship that develops between him and his mecha.
Its making was a 12-year passion project for Rich Ho, who wrote, directed and produced as well as served as the film’s music composer, production designer, director of photography and co-visual effects supervisor.
BC Tan, Takaki Nakadai, Sherman Ng, Penny Wall, Richard Stewart, and Grant Bradley served as executive producers.
Rincon negotiated the deal on behalf of the producers with Gus Krieger, Senior Director of Acquisitions at Radial Entertainment.
The new banner Radial Entertainment was formed last July by L.A.-based Oaktree Capital Management, out of the merger of its acquisitions Shout! Studios and FilmRise brands, which continue to operate as separate brands.
