Rachel Lindsay Weighs In on “Tainted” Bachelorette Franchise’s Future

Rachel Lindsay is certainly no stranger to Bachelor Nation controversies.

So, it only makes sense that the former Bachelorette is weighing in on ABC recently canceling Taylor Frankie Paul's season 22 premiere in the wake of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star's ongoing domestic dispute investigation.

"It's tainted," Rachel exclusively shared of the hit reality TV franchise during the March 26 episode of E!'s Hot Goss. "I'm very logical and I keep trying to figure out, 'How can you move around this?' And I'm sure they'll find a way, they are a business."

But from Rachel's POV:  "I cannot see a road forward with the franchise."

While the 40-year-old—who made history in 2017 as The Bachelorette's first-ever Black lead—acknowledged there "are a lot of people who are still begging" for Taylor's season to air, she also empathized with angry fans, especially after a video documenting the mother of three's 2023 physical altercation with ex Dakota Mortensen surfaced earlier this month.

"Maybe some people didn't know the history. So, I think that there are some people who are disturbed by it," she said, adding, "When you think of the name now, you're going to think of this."

But it's not just viewers who were thrown for a loop by the sudden cancellation, as Rachel acknowledged, contestants put their lives on pause in an effort to win the 31-year-old's heart.

"It's unfair," the lawyer shared. "There were fathers on this cast that left their families. Some people quit their jobs, some people took a pay cut. So, I understand the sentiment of, 'What do we do now?'"

One option, Rachel noted, would be for ABC to air Taylor's season at a later date.

"I think they've kind of left the door open," Rachel said, "and they're probably seeing what happens in the court of public opinion, what happens with the sponsors."

(Of the cancellation, a Disney Entertainment spokesperson said in a March 22 statement, "In light of the newly released video just surfaced today, we have made the decision to not move forward with the new season of The Bachelorette at this time, and our focus is on supporting the family.” While Taylor's rep told E! News she's "grateful" for ABC's support.)

Looking ahead, another option would be for the network to find a completely new Bachelorette for next season.

However, Rachel admitted, "I don't know who would want to step in after this. Maybe with time, sure. Will I watch? No. But it could be another Mormon Wife. Why not a Housewife? I love my Bravo world."

And Rachel isn't afraid to name names.

"I nominate Ashley Darby," she suggested, "Heather Gay or Adriana [De Moura] from Miami."

While fans wait on a decision from ABC, keep reading for a full timeline of Taylor's Bachelorette cancellation controversy and domestic violence scandal.

Taylor admitted in an interview with E! News that the altercation with Dakota was their “rock bottom for sure.”

"He stood by me with that because he knew everything going on behind closed doors,” she said. “That was a horrible night and I'm full of regret. Dakota has been at rock bottom himself, so he could totally relate. He was like, 'I want to help you out of this.'"

As for the confrontation itself, she later said the incident had been building up

“I had an ectopic [pregnancy] a few months prior, and then I had a chemical pregnancy,” she shared on the Viall Files podcast in September 2024. “I don't want to blame hormones, but I will put that into account. Like, I am pretty whack.”

Taylor added that the events had left her feeling lost and angry, saying, “I was feeling so low I went and drank that night. And Dakota picks me up and he’s angry that I drank.”

“I remember throwing things, and I don't know my daughters on the couch. We had babysitters there, so I think they’re upstairs sleeping,” she said, alleging that Dakota tried to tell her that her then 5-year-old daughter was present, but “I’m like so gone I don’t care, and I throw another chair.”

The decision marked a notable departure for the franchise, as it usually casts suitors from previous seasons of The Bachelor in the position.

But for Taylor, it was a welcome change, saying in a teaser for the season, “I do believe I was gifted this for another chapter in my life.”

“I’ve been criticized, I’ve been judged and I’ve been rejected,” Taylor continued, “but anyone that takes the time to know me will see that I’m actually a genuine person and I mean well and a person that deserves another chance at love.”

Later, Taylor could be heard yelling, “Get away from my daughter.”

After the video was published, a spokesperson for Taylor told E! As for the real estate agent, he denied her claims as “baseless.”
