EXCLUSIVE: ABC’s comedy pilot Do You Want Kids? is staging a Crazy Ex-Girlfriend reunion. Pete Gardner, who was a regular on the CW comedy-drama, has been cast as a series regular in Do You Want Kids?, co-created and executive produced by Crazy Ex-Girlfriend co-creator, executive producer and star Rachel Bloom and writer-producer Dan Goor.
Gardner is joining the pilot, headlined by Bloom and Rory Scovel, in recasting. He is replacing Daniel Stern, who had been originally set but exited days after he was charged with a misdemeanor.
The single-camera Do You Want Kids?, from 20th Television, is about a married couple, Rosie (Bloom) and Alex Vasilescu (Scovel), who in one universe have a baby and in the other do not, and the many ways that huge decision alters their lives.
Gardner will be playing Freddy, the gruff patriarch of the Vasilescu family.
Trent O’Donnell is directing the pilot, co-written by the husband-and-wife team of Bloom and Gregor. The trio are executive producing with Steven Levitan and Danielle Stokdyk of 20th TV-based Levitan Productions and Jeff Morton.
In addition to his role as Rebecca’s (Bloom) boss on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Gardner did a multi-episode arc on the last season of Netflix’s Never Have I Ever. He was recently featured in a supporting role in the film adaptation of Harold and the Purple Crayon. Gardner is repped by Ellis Talent Group and Seven Summits Pictures & Management.
