Earlier this week, speculation by leaker KeplerL2 hinted at an overwhelming price for the PlayStation 6. If KeplerL2 is correct, the price for hardware alone is roughly $760, which is a $200 increase from their previous estimate just a few months ago. This number could launch the final price for the PlayStation 6 close to an eye-watering $1,000.
A heated Reddit discussion started by Redditor metalreflectslime has gamers making their own predictions and pointing fingers. The original poster of the prediction estimates that the launch price will actually be closer to $1200 in order for Sony to make enough of a profit on the consoles.
This is further reinforced by Coolman_Rosso, who notes that the base material estimate "does NOT include assembly or logistical costs such as packaging, shipping, and storage." Many fans are quick to place the blame on AI, noting that AI is driving prices up at ludicrous rates. Reddit user RollingDownTheHills calls "pure f***ing garbage."
KeplerL2 also notes that Sony may be delaying the PS6 announcement and launch because the company is hoping the manufacturing and parts costs will go back down in the coming few years. However, as Redditor Midnight_M_ highlights, delaying the PS6 won't improve it in any way.
That's because, according to KeplerL2:
"Most people who are wishing/hoping for a delay probably think this means the PS6 would get "upgraded" somehow but it won't, specs have been locked in for a long time and a delay will change nothing."
In addition to the potentially incredibly high price at launch, fans predict that the PS6 will increase its price in the first year or two post-launch, as Nintendo did with the Switch 2.
With the era of exclusives coming to an end, many gamers in the comments wonder if it's even worth having a new console at this point. Besides this, it wouldn't make sense for Sony to completely alienate PS5 users, so PS6 games will likely receive PS5 ports, making the PS6 an even less attractive purchase.
Reddit user Caos2 writes: "Considering the high development costs and duration, on top of the ludicrous cost for hardware, there's no way the PS6 will have a significant number of exclusives."
Despite this, fans firmly believe that the PlayStation 6 will still sell well, even if it comes with a premium price tag. The overall response to the price, though, is best summed up by Redditor Ykindasus, who simply writes: "My hobby has become too expensive."
