Audiences spoke with their wallets this weekend and went out in droves to see Project Hail Mary.
Per the Hollywood Reporter, the sci-fi film made $80.6 million in North America and $141 million worldwide, the biggest open of Amazon’s theatrical films. That global launch may also make it the best to date for a 2026 film, and if that weren’t enough, it’s one of three non-sequel/franchise flicks to open over $60 million domestically. (The other two being Oppenheimer in 2023 and 2019’s Us.) It’s actually overperformed; initial projections pegged its domestic debut at $50 million or more. Then reactions from critics and audiences who saw it early drove up word of mouth, and the rest is history.
Project Hail Mary was also joined this weekend by Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. Reviews for that one haven’t been quite as high, but the sequel to Radio Silence’s 2019 horror-comedy has been met with a solid audience recpetion. Box office-wise, Ready 2 has made $11.9 million worldwide, with $9.1 million of that coming from North America. Domestically, it placed fourth behind Hail Mary, Hoppers (in its third weekend), and the Indian action flick Dhurandhar: The Revenge’s $13.9 million open. With a worldwide start of $81 million, Dhurandhar has the second-biggest opening for an Indian film.
Theatrically, movie watchers can look forward to IFC’s Forbidden Fruits and Warner Bros.’ They Will Kill You to close out the month on March 27. (Ready or Not 2 would’ve opened against it, but then Searchlight moved that film’s date up.) Then April kicks off with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which’ll no doubt be one of 2026’s biggest movies. Once that one hits, anything still in theaters before or directly after is probably going to get swallowed up.
