Kate Middleton Makes Surprise Appearance During Outing With Prince William
Prince William and Kate Middleton’s kids are royally tuned into their emotions.
William—who shares Kids Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7, with Kate—detailed his kids’ level of comfort with opening up about their feelings.
Indeed, William shared that his three little ones talk about their feelings “sometimes too much,” he quipped during a panel discussion for BBC Radio 1’s Life Hacks: Mental Health Special Feb. 18. "I get all the details, which I love, you know, it's amazing."
But that level of dialogue not only keeps William attuned to his children’s feelings, it also makes him want to solve their problems—an instinct the 43-year-old is trying to combat.
"You feel a sense that you need to fix it, for everyone and that I find quite difficult," William explained. "I have to remind myself that you don't need to fix everything, but you need to listen and it's important just to be OK with those feelings and those comments.”
He added, “You're going to have uncomfortable emotions and you're going to have really great emotions, there's a huge spectrum of in between."
And unpacking how previous generations approached mental health has been helpful for William’s own journey.
"I think my understanding, learning about mental health through my journey, has been about seeing how the previous generations try and understand why they didn't talk about it,” he continued. “So for me to understand where we are now, I need to understand where we've been.”
"I think the situation with the World Wars, generations before us couldn't talk about their emotions,” he added. “They saw and they went through some really horrendous things that no matter how much you try and talk about it, it wouldn't have really helped anyone. So they, as a generation, decided, probably not deliberately, but they just kept to themselves.”

While the dad of three acknowledged that an unhealthy approach to mental health struggles has been passed down from generation to generation, he noted how it’s up to parents today to teach their kids better coping skills.
“They then hand that mantle on to the next generation, again not deliberately, but by sort of, that's all they knew,” he said. “And we have to break that cycle where it's, you know, you have to talk about your emotions. You can’t just bottle them up and pretend they don’t exist.”
“We've got a long way to go in this journey of mental health,” he added, “but it's really crucial we know where we've come from because that is such important growth for all of us to get our heads around where we're trying to head to."

Høiby is expected in court Feb. 3 as part of a separate indictment regarding four alleged rapes between 2018 and 2024, as well as two alleged acts of violence against a partner and violating a restraining order.
