The show was first announced in 2025, with Vikings' Michael Hirst on board as co-creator and co-showrunner with his son, Horatio Hirst. Bloodaxe stars Xavier Molyneux as Norse raider Erik Bloodaxe and Jessica Madsen as his wife, Gunnhild, Mother of Kings. Together, the couple fights to win the throne in Norway, but they face many obstacles along the way, including shocking rivalries, betrayals and a war on the horizon.
Bloodaxe doesn't have a premiere date yet, but several first-look images have been released, teasing what Prime Video subscribers can expect from the Norse series. The photos feature cast members Molyneaux, Madsen, Karlis Arnolds Avots, Levi Miller, Alina Tomnikov, Sisse Marie, Rune Tempte and Jesper Christensen.
Some of the images show Miller's Haakon the Good standing on a beach with ships behind him, and riding on a horse into battle, with his army alongside and behind him. Others feature Erik Bloodaxe yelling out while raising up his ax, and kissing his wife during a happy moment for the couple. The series also stars Rod Hallett.
