Prime Video will release its new major cyberpunk sci-fi series soon, and it serves as a fitting replacement for a William Gibson adaptation that was canceled by the streaming service way too soon. Prime Video's list of TV shows includes hits from different genres. There are action thrillers like Reacher, high fantasy shows like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and many more.

That said, looking at Prime Video's 2026 TV show slate, it is easy to see that sci-fi shows continue to post huge numbers for the streaming service, being a popular genre among subscribers. Some of those sci-fi series on Prime Video include Ella Purnell's video game adaptation Fallout, the superhero satire series The Boys, and other intriguing genre shows.

Prime Video is also the streaming service responsible for saving one of the best sci-fi TV shows of all time. That would be The Expanse, which aired its first three seasons on Syfy before it was canceled. Prime Video then saved The Expanse, bringing the sci-fi series to a total of six seasons. Now, the streamer is getting ready to bring a major franchise to the small screen.

Blade Runner is one of the most iconic sci-fi movies franchises of all time. With directors like Ridley Scott and Denis Villeneuve, the Blade Runner movies have depicted gorgeous neon-soaked cyberpunk cities filled with complex characters and philosophical debates. Prime Video's Blade Runner 2099 is a sci-fi series set 50 years after Ryan Gosling's Blade Runner 2049, and it changes the franchise's landscape, also replacing a canceled Prime Video series.

Blade Runner 2099 Comes As Prime Video's New Cyberpunk Replacement For The Peripheral

Blade Runner 2099 explores a world where replicants, a sort of biological androids, have taken over the world, with few humans remaining. The new Prime Video sci-fi series features major stars, such as Hunter Schafer, Michelle Yeoh, and more. Blade Runner 2099's trailers have shown that the cyberpunk series will come with the same gorgeous visuals as the movies, made whole with neon-soaked and technologically advanced cities, all with a gritty atmosphere. Blade Runner 2099 serves as an exciting replacement for a previous release on Prime Video's slate of TV shows — the William Gibson adaptation The Peripheral.

Gibson is the foundational author of the cyberpunk subgenre. The Peripheral released eight episodes in late 2022, following Chloë Grace Moretz's Flynne Fisher as she discovers that, through a headset, Flynne's consciousness travels to the future, landing in a synthetic body in a technologically advanced London, and unravels a shadowy conspiracy, as well as learns about an event that will end the world as she knows it. Sadly, despite initially having been renewed for season 2, The Peripheral was canceled by Prime Video as a result of the long 2023 SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strikes. Blade Runner 2099 replaces it as Prime Video's new premier cyberpunk series.

Another William Gibson Cyberpunk Series Is Coming To Streaming Soon

Blade Runner 2099 might come from a franchise that is based on a Philip K. Dick novel, but Gibson will soon see another book of his get adapted into live-action. It also happens to be the foundational cyberpunk novel, Neuromancer, which was released all the way back in 1984. Apple TV is adapting Neuromancer as a live-action series joining the streamer's huge list of hit sci-fi shows, which currently includes projects like Silo, For All Mankind, Foundation, Dark Matter, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and many more.

Apple TV's Neuromancer will debut on the streaming service on January 22, 2027. The upcoming cyberpunk series comes with an exciting cast, which will be led by Callum Turner as Case. There is a good chance that by the time Neuromancer comes around, Turner might have already been announced as the next James Bond, given how he is a finalist for the role. For now, Prime Video covers the cyberpunk genre with Blade Runner 2099, replacing Gibson's The Peripheral, and fans of the author have Neuromancer to look forward to next year.
