Prime Video just added another powerhouse to its epic God of War series adaptation. Production on the series officially began late last month with the streamer unleashing a spectacular first look at Kratos and Atreus in live-action, and filming is currently underway in Vancouver, BC. Now, as cameras continue rolling, Prime Video has finally announced who will be playing fan-favorite goddess Freya.
Sonya Walger, best known for her roles in For All Mankind and Lost, has signed on to recur as Freya in Prime Video’s God of War seriesfrom Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. In the new adaptation of the smash-hit video game series, Freya is officially described as "a Vanir goddess and princess who practices powerful, ancient magic. She is also Odin’s ex-wife and the former Queen of the Valkyries in Asgard, a title bestowed upon her on her marriage day. She is strong, insightful, and filled with regrets. When Freya’s unhappy marriage to Odin ended with her being exiled, she was cut off from her family, as well as her native land, Vanaheim. Freya has lived alone in Midgard for a century, a recluse in a hidden glade, feared by humans, and often referred to as the Witch of the Woods."
Walger's casting serves as a reunion of sorts with the actress reteaming with For All Mankind creator Ronald D. Moore, who was tapped to helm Prime Video's God of War series back in 2024. Moore has assembled an incredible cast for the series, which will be led by God of War voice actor and Sons of Anarchy alum Ryan Hurst as Kratos, alongside newcomer Callum Vinson as Atreus, as the duo at the heart of the story. The series cast also includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn as Brok.

Prime Video Has Already Renewed 'God of War' for Season 2
Alongside the first look and production announcement last month, Prime Video revealed that the series has already been greenlit for at least two seasons on the streamer. Doubling down on the series this early is an excellent sign for fans eager to dive back into the world of the beloved game series. Moore has a long history of crafting incredible genre television from the sci-fi worlds of For All Mankind and Battlestar Galacticato the romantasy juggernaut Outlander, and Prime Video clearly has faith in his vision for God of War. The stacked talent for the series extends into every part of the cast and crew, as Shōgun director Frederick E.O. Toye has joined the creative team behind the camera.
“This world and this universe are really rich, and it's interesting, and it's really been fun to adapt. It's an adaptation, so it's an adaptation-slash-interpretation as you go into live-action, and it's been really fun to sort of go, ‘Wow, there's a lot here we can play with. Okay, we want to keep the story. We want to keep the characters and the spirit of it.’ There's all this stuff that you can keep turning to for inspiration. It's really been interesting.”
God of War is currently filming Season 1. Stay tuned at Collider for more updates.
