Ryan O'Rourke is a Senior News Writer at Collider with a specific interest in all things adult animation, video game adaptations, and the work of Mike Flanagan. He is also an experienced baseball writer with over six years of articles between multiple outlets, most notably FanSided's CubbiesCrib. Whether it's taking in a baseball game, a new season of Futurama or Castlevania: Nocturne, or playing the latest From Software title, he is always finding ways to show his fandom. When it comes to gaming and anything that takes inspiration from it, he is deeply opinionated on what's going on. Outside of entertainment, he's a graduate of Eureka College with a Bachelor's in Communication where he honed his craft as a writer. Between The IV Leader at Illinois Valley Community College and The Pegasus at Eureka, he spent the majority of his college career publishing articles on everything from politics to campus happenings and, of course, entertainment for the student body. Those principles he learned covering the 2020 election, Palestine, and so much more are brought here to Collider, where he has gleefully written on everything from the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes to Nathan Lane baby-birding sewer boys.

Prime Video has a wealth of massive series under its belt, from The Boys to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Reacher, yet nothing has set the world on fire like Fallout. The adaptation of the open-world post-apocalyptic RPGs from Interplay Entertainment and Bethesda has introduced a whole new audience to the series' quirky, retrofuturistic, and ultraviolent approach to the nuclear wasteland with great success, earning rave reviews and over 100 million views for both of its first two seasons. Unsurprisingly, the streamer is now looking to expand beyond the journeys of Lucy (Ella Purnell), The Ghoul (Walton Goggins), and Maximus (Aaron Moten) to explore this world of mutants, monsters, and dangerous, colorful factions in a new way. Ahead of Season 3 next year, they're now officially opening the vault.

Reports surfaced at the beginning of the year that Fallout would be getting its own reality competition. Created by Squid Game: The Challenge producers Studio Lambert in conjunction with Kilter Films, Fallout Shelter: The Experiment was announced as a more narrative-driven contest between players inside one of Vault-Tec's state-of-the-art bomb shelters. While the in-universe vaults typically feature horrifying, experimental twists inflicted upon all the residents, this one will put their aptitudes to the test in "high-octane drills, psychological dilemmas, and morally challenging behavior trials" for the chance to win the grand prize of $1 million. Prime Video has now unveiled the first teaser to celebrate Fallout Day and confirmed that it will launch on January 13, 2027.

The short video doesn't reveal much about the show outside of a message sent to a Pip-Boy. It reads, "The world is ending. The competition is just beginning," giving a sense of how the show picks up from the nuclear disaster that created Fallout's irradiated world. Shortly after, the date is unveiled, leaving much to the imagination as to how the experience of the vaults will be recreated. At the very least, it's an atmospheric teaser setting up a similar tone to that of the megahit adaptation with help from the team behind it all.

'Fallout' Is Finally Seeing New Life in Its Games

Fallout Shelter's existence is a testament to just how popular the franchise and its show are at the moment. For once, though, the games themselves are seeing real movement. Bethesda has mostly devoted its efforts within the series of late to updating its online RPG, Fallout 76, and releasing the anniversary edition of Fallout 4. That changed rapidly over the summer, with the studio reaffirming that Fallout 5 is a long-range development goal for them, and they're working on remastering both Fallout 3 and New Vegas for modern consoles. On top of that, Obsidian Entertainment, the masterminds behind New Vegas, are developing their own project in the universe once again and have partnered back up with Bethesda to shape the course of the franchise's future. There's a long way to go until any of these projects see the light of day, but it's much more than fans have heard in quite some time.

Fallout Shelter premieres on January 13, 2027, on Prime Video. Check out the first teaser in the player above.
