Over the past several years, Prime Video has steadily built a library of fantasy programming, including bringing Critical Role into its lineup in creative ways that could sustain themselves forever. With fantasy booming, Prime Video has capitalized on the demand for more by taking a look at what fans are most interested in within the realm of the genre, even outside of TV itself.

By capitalizing on content that may not seem like the perfect fit upfront, Prime Video has found creative new angles to develop projects that fans are passionate about. Critical Role, which began as a niche internet phenomenon, has grown to have huge cultural relevance in the fantasy world, and now has stemmed into its own set of Prime Video projects.

Originating as a livestreamed tabletop role-playing campaign featuring a group of professional voice actors playing Dungeons & Dragons, Critical Role has built sprawling fantasy narratives since its debut in 2015. The show's humor and long-form storytelling is supplemented by the cast's chemistry, and in recent years, Prime Video has developed adaptations of the cast's campaigns that have surpassed any fan expectations.

Prime Video's Critical Role Adaptations Have Been Excellent So Far

Throughout the past several years, viewers have watched excitedly as Critical Role's campaigns have been meticulously shaped into two animated series on Prime Video. In 2022, Prime Video released The Legend Of Vox Machina, which is based on the first campaign of Critical Role. With the series having come from a mega-successful Kickstarter campaign, Prime Video has taken the reigns in subsequent years.

Following twins Vex'ahlia "Vex" Vessar (Laura Bailey) and Vax'ildan "Vax" Vessar (Liam O'Brien) along with the rest of their team, the series adapts the Briarwood arc from the original web series. Watching as the crew avenge the murder of the Whitestone town rulers, the show was a massive success with its initial release. Having been renewed annually, The Legend Of Vox Machina will return in 2026.

Though viewers are likely to want more from The Legend Of Vox Machina after season 4 and the already-renewed season 5, the fifth season has been announced as its final. Thankfully, another Critical Role campaign has launched into a series of its own. Based on the web series' second campaign, The Mighty Nein was released on Prime Video in 2025.

Starring Bailey as Jester Lavorre, O'Brien as Caleb Widogast, and other members of the Critical Role cast in various roles, The Mighty Nein is based on the second Critical Role campaign. Following a group of secretive misfits with troubled pasts, the group finds themselves working together against a large conflict to save the realm after a powerful relic makes its way into the wrong hands.

Both The Legend Of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein have been tremendously successful for Prime Video, and have been well-received by fans of Critical Role and beyond. Utilizing the cast from the campaigns as well as actors with more star power, both shows have been able to cut to the heart of why Critical Role's viewers loved watching the original campaigns.

Prime Video's Critical Role-Inspired Shows Could Potentially Never End

While two of Critical Role's campaigns have found themselves turned into successful shows on Prime Video, the web series has far more to offer than The Legend Of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein. One of the most intriguing aspects of adapting Critical Role campaigns comes from the fact that they're continuous. As of March 2026, Critical Role has hosted four campaigns, with one still ongoing.

With each campaign spanning hundreds of hours of gameplay, the animated shows on Prime Video could continue far into the future as Critical Role continues to play together, creating new stories. Expanding the worlds with gameplay, or by simply teasing out elements of the existing series, Prime Video could work within Critical Role's universe for years on end. There's plenty of room for spinoffs, side stories, or anything else.

Prime Video has increasingly leaned into large-scale fantasy worlds as a core part of its streaming strategy. Within that lineup, Critical Role stands out because its storytelling pipeline is consistently evolving. As the franchise grows organically and the cast continues to play new campaigns, exploring new corners of their world, the content on Prime Video could realistically continue for years to come.
