Prime Video's Bosch Franchise Update Confirms A Harsh Reality

Titus Welliver’s update on Bosch’s spinoff confirms a harsh reality about the future of the franchise. Crime novelist Michael Connelly has written 42 fiction books, with another on the way in October 2026. The author has won nearly every major award in the mystery genre. Although most are great reads, none are as popular as those featuring Harry Bosch. This includes joint ventures in The Lincoln Lawyer, which is adapted on Netflix without Harry Bosch, and the Renee Ballard and Harry Bosch series, which is the source of the spinoff TV show.

After seven seasons of the original show and three seasons of the sequel, Bosch became a flagship IP for Prime Video. However, the baton passed from Titus Welliver’s Harry Bosch to Maggie Q’s Renee Ballard in 2025, when the Bosch: Legacy series finale served as a backdoor pilot for the Ballard TV show. Michael Connelly confirmed that Titus Welliver’s Harry Bosch would appear in three episodes of the new show to assist Renee Ballard without overshadowing her. Although he had sparse appearances, they were heavily impactful.

The end of Ballard season 1 showed Bosch having a pretty big role in uncovering the corrupt police officers and crime ring. He helped trace the evidence and analyze the phone data. It seemed like they were building to something bigger, akin to the Renee Ballard and Harry Bosch books. However, Welliver confirmed to ScreenRant that he would only appear in three episodes of season 2. He stated that he “comes in to kind of service the brand.” The actor’s quote confirms the harsh reality that the Bosch franchise believes it needs Titus Welliver to succeed.

We have very little information about what to expect going into Ballard season 2. Despite erroneous reports that it would come out in July 2026, Michael Connelly updated audiences that it would come at the end of 2026 or early 2027. Connelly’s website confirms that the season will adapt elements the 2024 book The Waiting, which involves Bosch’s daughter Maddie and a serial rapist. It’s unclear how much of the story will be used. However, the biggest bit of news is that Welliver is returning for another three episodes of Ballard season 2. No more. No less.

Based on the numerous interviews I listened to when preparing to cover Ballard season 1, I got the impression that they were going to slowly transition Titus Welliver’s Bosch out of the spotlight so that it could fully focus on Maggie Q’s Renee Ballard. However, they didn’t decrease the number of episodes going into the second outing. They also didn’t lean into the dual lead book series. What’s more, Titus Welliver’s comment about him “[servicing] the brand” indicates that the creative team behind the franchise doesn’t plan on letting go of the actor any time soon.

This is a bit of a double-edged sword. On the one hand, Titus Welliver is virtually synonymous with the Bosch franchise because he played the character for ten years. He is a major part of the reason why audiences fell in love with the TV show. Even with the prequel starring Cameron Monaghan and the sequel starring Maggie Q, Welliver’s legacy will never change. His appearances feel like a nod to that. Plus, he's just a phenomenal actor, who I'd happily watch in any role.

On the other hand, it isn’t completely fair to audiences, the actors, and the show to continue presenting Welliver’s Bosch as the singular face of the franchise. The audience only has small moments with a character they’ve grown attached to, which doesn’t satiate their appetites. Because he keeps coming back, there’s no closure with Bosch. The actors on Ballard and Bosch: Start of Watch have to exist in the massive shadow of the original Bosch. Narratively, the franchise is being held back by nostalgia instead of being able to grow.

Bosch: Start Of Watch Will Need To Pull Off A Miracle To Succeed

Titus Welliver’s comment about his role in the franchise is also another reminder that the MGM+ series Bosch: Start of Watch will need an absolute miracle to succeed. Amazon MGM Studios is already taking a gamble by putting the show on MGM+ instead of Prime Video. Everyone who watched Bosch had Prime Video. There’s no guarantee that the built-in fanbase will have MGM+ or be willing to pay an extra $7 just to watch the show. Bosch: Start of Watch will be the first show not to use the books as source material. Additionally, it will be the first TV show without Titus Welliver.

The actor confirmed that his version of Harry Bosch will not return in the prequel. Unless they have some large-scale ace up their sleeve, they won’t have Welliver to “service the franchise.” Practically, it would be difficult to incorporate older adult Bosch into a prequel, and it would distract from Cameron Monaghan. Still, fans don’t get the actor they bought into twelve years ago.

Bosch: Start of Watch will face a change of platform, change of format, and change of actor. Any one of these would be a risk. All three feel like they’re dooming the show, though I’ll happily admit that I was wrong if it’s a success.

Perhaps they’re betting on folks wanting to watch Titus Welliver’s new MGM+ show The Westies, so they think fans will subscribe to the streamer and watch both The Westies and Bosch: Start of Watch. That's just speculation on my part. However, it seems like a foolish notion, if correct. The Westies is great, but it’s not Bosch. In fact, Titus Welliver’s character is the anti-Bosch, full of corruption and flexible morality. What’s more, Bosch: Start of Watch has a different lead actor.

Another Bosch Spinoff Starring Titus Welliver Is Still Possible (But Unlikely)

Considering Prime Video is still holding onto Titus Welliver as Harry Bosch, the question naturally comes up whether they eventually plan on creating a new show with him as the lead or bringing Bosch: Legacy back for season 4. The creative team behind Bosch hasn’t indicated any plans of doing so. However, Titus Welliver is open to the idea of doing another Bosch show.

While promoting The Westies, Welliver did an interview with MovieWeb, where he mentioned the possibility of continuing as Harry Bosch. The actor brought up that there’s plenty of source material to work with and made a painfully true admission. He stated:

“I feel like the fans would really like it. They didn't get proper closure, for lack of a better word.”

Bosch fans didn’t get closure. Storylines didn’t feel wrapped up, and the finale of Bosch: Legacy didn’t bother to end the title character’s story. Instead, it shifted attention to Ballard.

Despite this, the chances of another Bosch spinoff starring Titus Welliver seem unlikely. The actor has remained extremely busy since he ended Bosch. He is a main character in The Westies, so he’ll undoubtedly return if the show gets renewed. Welliver has seven credits this year alone, plus another TV show in post-production. While another Bosch TV show starring him would be welcomed by the fans, it’s likely he will remain a figurehead of the franchise that gets brought back in every season of Ballard. There's also a possibility they could take the route of other TV franchises and make a movie starring Titus Welliver.
