Prime Video's 8-Part Superhero Anthology Is A Rare Series Where Every Episode Is 10/10

Prime Video has an eight-episode superhero anthology series where every episode is as good as the last one. Amazon Prime has really gone all in on the superheroes, at least as all in as you can go without access to the Marvel and DC Comics stables. The Tick, The Boys, Gen Z, and Invincible are some of the most popular series of the last ten years.

It has also produced several notable anthology series, like Lore, Them, Secret Level, and Modern Love, running the gamut of genres. Prime seems to be willing to dabble in just about everything, not restricting itself to one genre or type of show. One of their more recent successes is a unique combination that we haven't seen before.

The Boys Presents: Diabolical is an eight-episode superhero anthology series that premiered in March 2022. The series, created by Eric Kripke, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg, the team behind The Boys, is set within the world of The Boys, featuring old and new characters in side tales.

Like The Boys, The Boys Presents: Diabolical is ultra-violent and crude, but it has an even more comedic tone than The Boys, for the most part. Each episode of the anthology is directed by a different creative team, lending each episode a wildly different tone and animation style.

Justin Roiland and Ben Bayouth present a Rick and Morty-like episode, there's a romantic comedy in the style of French animation, and hyper-cartoony episodes that look like they could be one-half of a Looney Tunes episode. Each one is different, but in eight episodes, there isn't one misstep.

Every Episode Of The Boys Presents: Diabolical Is A Hit

Every episode of The Boys Presents: Diabolical is a hit. The goofy, funny episodes like "Laser Baby's Day Out," where a scientist uses a happy-go-lucky laser-eyed baby to murder dozens of people, are ridiculous and silly. The more dramatic episodes, like "John and Sun-Hee", manage to be moving despite being less than 15 minutes.

​​​The creative team of the show seems to have let each episode's director and animators have full control of the project. Instead of getting eight similar episodes in different flavors, we get eight episodes that are very different from one another. There is more than just the art style changing each episode.

Each episode takes a look at superheroes from a different angle. The humor and scope change each episode, and how seriously the world is taken changes each episode. Even with all these differences, Diabolical feels firmly entrenched in The Boys universe. It's a series where every episode will surprise you but still keep you engaged.

The Boys Presents: Diabolical Deserved A Second Season

The Boys Presents: Diabolical likely won't be getting a second season, with Kripke flat out stating that the show wouldn't return. While he and others did push Amazon for it, Kripke explained that the viewing numbers weren't there to justify another season. It's a shame because there are plenty more stories to tell.

The Boys universe is designed to tell side stories and offshoots. Anything could be happening all over the world when it comes to Compound V. Even with The Boys being over, The Boys Presents: Diabolical could still tell the stories that were happening before Homelander ate it.
