The news that John Krasinski will reprise his title role from Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan in Ghost War is a perfect excuse to revisit the original Prime Video spy series. It is not easy to get spy shows right. While 2024’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith managed this feat, Prime Video’s expensive flop Citadel and its canceled spinoffs prove small-screen espionage is tricky.
Years ago, this might have been easily blamed on the limited budgets of TV shows. Movie franchises have more money to pull off globe-trotting adventures and life-risking stunts, whereas TV shows tend to be less ambitious. However, as Netflix’s acclaimed thriller Bodyguard proves, spy shows don’t always need big budgets to impress viewers.
John Krasinski's Jack Ryan Is Returning In Ghost War
MovieStills DBMoreover, in the era of streaming, plenty of TV franchises command budgets that are as big, if not bigger, than the price tags of big-screen blockbusters. This is certainly the case with Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, a four-season spy show from Prime Video that was just as flashy, expensive, and explosive as the earlier movie adaptation of Clancy’s books.
Previously played by Harrison Ford and Chris Pine, Jack Ryan is an unlikely hero in the Prime Video series. As played by The Office’s John Krasinski, Ryan is a desk jockey who only ends up deployed on the field due to a complex mystery that unfolds throughout season 1 of the series.
As the story of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan continues, Krasinski’s spy becomes a bona fide action hero but never loses his everyman appeal and the vulnerable humanity of his season 1 self. The upcoming spinoff movie, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War, will no doubt bring back this blend of brains, brawn, and heart when Krasinski reprises the role in May 2026.
How Ghost War Will Be Different From The Jack Ryan Series
Attila Szvacsek/Prime VideoNot a lot is known about the plot of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War, but one thing is certain. Now that Krasinski’s version of Clancy’s iconic spy is on the big screen, viewers won’t need to wait as long for action set pieces, dramatic chases, and shootouts.
In an interview with Collider, the actor said that the movie’s story would be more condensed and shorter, allowing more room for expensive set pieces and less low-key espionage. Per Krasinski, “The big fun action stuff” that was kept to a minimum thanks to the TV show’s smaller budget will finally be front and center in Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War.
Do You Need To Watch Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan Before The Movie?
Amazon Prime VideoWhile the release of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War is an ideal excuse for viewers to revisit the TV show, it is unlikely that newcomers to the franchise will be lost if they stumble on the movie without watching the show first. Since Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War is getting a theatrical release, the spinoff will need a wide appeal.
In order to maximize the movie’s reach, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War will have to tell a story that makes sense to viewers who haven’t watched all four seasons of the show. As such, while re-watching Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan is perfect preparation for Ghost War, it’s not a necessary step to enjoying the movie.
