This Prime Video Series Sets A High Bar For Spinoffs
Gen V is one of Prime Video's best sci-fi series. The Boys' spinoff features key characters from the fan-favorite TV-MA superhero satire series in guest roles and cameo appearances, with players like Homelander, Billy Butcher, Starlight, The Deep, and more showing up. However, Gen V does not require previous knowledge of the franchise to enjoy the show, which presents an intriguing storyline on its own.
Gen V debuted on Prime Video on September 29, 2023, with season 2 arriving on the streaming service two years later. Throughout its 16 episodes released so far — Gen V still has to be renewed for season 3 — the sci-fi series explores elements like corruption, psychological trauma, genetic research, and more in a twisted coming-of-age story that breaks down its characters before building them back up.
Between Gen V and The Boys, there is no doubt that the mothership series is the most popular and well-received project out of the two. That said, the spinoff sets a high bar for other such shows, as it manages to tell a story from a fresh angle in The Boys universe while also deepening the lore of the original series in an enticing way.
Why Gen V Is Worth Watching On Prime Video
On Rotten Tomatoes, Gen V holds a near-perfect 94% critics' score, with a lower, but still respectable, 74% audience score. Anyone on the fence about watching the sci-fi series can see how highly critics talk of the show, which is deemed "as gruesomely subversive as its origin series." Gen V is not The Boys franchise overstaying its welcome, but showing its staying power.
The Boys season 5, the final season of the Prime Video series, debuts on April 8. While I won't spoil it, events from Gen V season 2 lead directly into the hit series' finale, much like season 1 of the spinoff played a key role in The Boys season 4's story by introducing the Supe Virus. As such, both new viewers and those who have only watched The Boys should check out Gen V soon.
