Rohan Naahar is a Weekend News Writer for Collider. From Francois Ozon to David Fincher, he'll watch anything once.
He has covered everything from Marvel to the Oscars, and Marvel at the Oscars. He also writes obsessively about the box office, charting the many hits and misses that are released weekly, and how their commercial performance shapes public perception. In his time at Collider, he has also helped drive diversity by writing stories about the multiple Indian film industries, with a goal of introducing audiences to a whole new world of cinema.
Rare is the movie that tries to mend bridges in a world this divided. A new war movie is doing it both literally and figuratively. The movie was released to highly positive reviews earlier this year, but it struggled to break out at the box office — ironically, it was completely overwhelmed by a holdover hit that had the opposite political philosophy. However, the war movie is doing exceptionally well on streaming, having recently found a spot on the global Prime Video charts, according to FlixPatrol. This is a grand achievement not only for the movie in question, but for the concept of pacifism in today's confrontational climate; the movie we're talking about is perhaps the most pointed anti-war epic since All Quiet on the Western Front remake from a few years ago.
Framed against a war that affected billions, the film highlights a conflict that remains under-discussed globally. It stars Agastya Nanda, who made his debut in Netflix's The Archies, as the real-life soldier Arun Khetarpal, who died at the age of 21 during the 1971 India-Pakistan War. Nanda stars alongside the legendary Dharmendra, who plays Kheterpal's grieving father. An acting icon with a career spanning decades, Dharmendra passed away a few weeks before the film's release. In the film, the late superstar's character goes on a cross-border journey from India to Pakistan, with the goal of visiting the spot where his son died. He is hosted by a Pakistani army veteran, with whom he reminisces about his son's sacrifice. They form a bond despite the constant conflict that their two countries have been in ever since the 1947 Partition, when the British divided India and created Pakistan.

The movie we're talking about is Ikkis, directed by Sriram Raghavan. In Hindi, the word "Ikkis" translates to "21." The film holds a perfect 100% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where critics have hailed it as "an intimate exploration of duty, loss, and the human side of conflict," "emotionally engaging," and for highlighting "the residual connections between people regardless of borders." Many also compared it to the blockbuster Dhurandhar, whose record-breaking box office run effectively steamrolled Ikkis. Dhurandhar was criticized for its perceived propagandist and hate-mongering tone, but has emerged as the most successful Bollywood movie of all time.
You can watch Ikkis on Prime Video. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
