One of Prime Video’s most exciting projects is officially moving forward, and it has the potential to be the next Game of Thrones. Prime Video has positioned itself as one of the biggest and most popular streaming platforms, in large part thanks to its original content. Some of Prime Video’s original shows now rank among the best TV shows of all time, such as The Expanse, Fleabag, and The Boys. However, if there’s one genre where Prime Video has stood out, it’s fantasy.
TV shows like The Wheel of Time, Good Omens, The Legend of Vox Machina, and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power have turned Prime Video into a go-to platform for fantasy fans. At the time of writing, Prime Video has more plans for its fantasy branch, with both new seasons and new shows. Among the latter is Fourth Wing, based on the adult fantasy romance novel of the same name by Rebecca Yarros.
Fourth Wing was published in 2023 and became a viral success within the BookTok community, turning it into a worldwide phenomenon. It’s not surprising, then, that there’s interest in bringing the novel to life through a TV show, which was announced to be in development in 2023 after Amazon acquired the rights to all the books in the series. Now, after a long wait, the Fourth Wing TV show has been officially greenlit, and it can be Prime Video’s Game of Thrones.
Fourth Wing Can Be Prime Video’s Biggest Fantasy TV Show Ever
Fourth Wing is the first entry in Yarros’ Empyrean book series, and it takes its audience into its own, multi-layered and complex fantasy world. Fourth Wing follows Violet Sorrengail, the 20-year-old daughter of General Lilith Sorrengail, the leader of the Basgiath War College in Navarre. There, students join one of four military branches – Infantry, Healer, Scribe, or Rider – and train for three years before being sent out to war.
Despite dealing with chronic pain and weak joints, Violet is ordered by her mother to join the Riders, where she has to go through deadly quests and competitions to become a dragon rider. On top of that, Violet also does her best not to be killed by Xaden Riorson, one of the most powerful riders whose father was executed by Violet’s mother. Fourth Wing, then, is a blend of fantasy, drama, and action, with complex characters, dynamics, and universe, along with relatable characters, all of them strong elements to make it one of Prime Video’s best fantasy shows.
What’s known about Prime Video’s Fourth Wing TV adaptation so far is that Meredith Averill is serving as showrunner, with Michael B. Jordan, Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy, and Athena Wickham executive producing. In May 2026, Fourth Wing was officially given a full series order, and while there’s no projected release date yet, the show can now begin the search for its lead actors.
What Fourth Wing Needs To Do To Compete With Game Of Thrones
Credit: HBO via MovieStillsDBIt’s easy to see why Fourth Wing will draw comparisons to Game of Thrones, as it’s also set in a high-fantasy world with creatures like dragons, political tensions, and social issues, but the HBO series set the bar high. Leaving its controversial finale (and final season, in general) aside, Game of Thrones is one of the best fantasy TV shows of all time, thanks to its production value, complex stories and characters, world-building, and performances.
To stand out and be a worthy Game of Thrones competitor, Fourth Wing will have to focus on solid CGI, production design, and being as faithful to the source material as possible, especially given how popular it is. Fourth Wing has to find the perfect balance between its romance elements, action, and mystery, while also finding the right pace, which is something that Game of Thrones failed at in its later seasons.
One of Fourth Wing’s strengths is its unique universe, which can make it stand out from the most popular fantasy shows in recent years, but of course, it has to be done right to achieve that. Prime Video’s Fourth Wing has many challenges ahead, but it already has a solid foundation.
