In brief: OLED displays have come a long way in recent times. Just take a look at the Edge 4K OLED Ultralight Portable Magnetic Monitor. Not only does it feature a magnetic back for attaching accessories, but it can also be purchased with a wireless transmitter that can beam a signal over 100 feet to the display – and with zero latency, allegedly.
Created by Hong Kong-based InnLead, the monitor is being crowdfunded on indiegogo, which means you should be aware of the inherent risks associated with these campaigns. The portable screen measures 15.6 inches and boasts a 4K resolution on its 60Hz Samsung OLED panel, offering all the benefits of the technology, such as perfect blacks, in a small, portable form factor.
The monitor's headline feature is its magnetic design. This allows the seamless connection of accessories to the back of the screen, including a stand, RGB light bar, or a magnetic phone mount.
The other interesting element is the optional wireless pack, allowing devices to be connected to the monitor without the use of HDMI cables. InnLead writes that the mmWave transceiver has a 100-ft range, adding that users can connect several different devices to the monitor, such as a laptop, tablet, or smartphone, and switch between them effortlessly.
The rest of the specs are also pretty compelling: 100% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, 10-bit color support, 100,000:1 contrast ratio, and 400 nits brightness.
Elsewhere, the monitor with its CNC-machined housing weighs in at a very light 1.46 pounds and measures just 7.6mm thick, thinner than most phones. It also comes with two USB Type-C ports, a mini-HDMI port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
There are several options available if you want to make a pledge. The OLED 5D starts at $399.99 for the Super Early Bird tier, though you can get it for $339.99 if you have an old monitor or tablet to trade in. That's a significant saving over the planned $569 retail price. There's also a touchscreen option with a built-in battery priced at $519 ($459 with a trade-in). It's expected to retail for $700.
As for those accessories, buyers get the magnetic cover stand, normally $19, included. Different packages also come with the lightbar ($27) and phone mount ($16). If you want the mmWave transceiver for wireless connectivity, be prepared to spend another $199.
The Edge 4K OLED monitor has raised $3,841 from 8 backers with 45 days left. Considering it has a flexible goal of $515, the campaign appears to be going quite well.
