Whether it was the debacle with his rackets or the pressure of the final, he just could not find a break against Sinner, who was simply flawless.
But it's been a whirlwind fortnight for Sinner, who had fallen ill and worried fans earlier in the week during his victory against Holger Rune.
Rumours had even spread that he had pneumonia, with Sinner being coy on the nature of the illness, but he returned to dispatch both Alex de Minaur and Ben Shelton to secure his berth in the finals.
Zverev, meanwhile, has reached three Grand Slam finals and is still yet to secure victory.
He had earlier vented his fury by smashing up his racket.
It came after Jannik Sinner had claimed the second set, with the German, who has not had a breakpoint in the match, took a commanding lead.
Zverev had previously fumed to the chair umpire that he had asked his rackets to be strung an hour before the match but he had never received the rackets.
He told the chair umpire that he needed the rackets 'now' and asked if he could get a second one strung up.
However it was not looking so good for Zverev with Sinner taking a 4-2 lead in the third set and the match moving out of his reach.
