Pokmon TCG Pocket Fan Gives Players A Nostalgia Trip With Game Boy-Inspired Booster Packs

5 days ago 9

Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket has proven to be a massive success among fans, but sometimes it's fun to look back at the games that helped define it. The Pokémon TCG has been adapted for digital platforms on several occasions, but the first was the version created for the Game Boy Color. It may not have sported the slick artwork of the tabletop version but it was a surprisingly robust way to play the game with a vast roster of cards to collect and even a decent campaign for solo players.

Over on Reddit, user Deikar shared their fantastic art that imagines the Booster Pack screen of Pokémon TCG Pocket as it may have appeared in Pokémon TCG for the Game Boy Color.

The artist used the Game Boy Booster Packs as the basis for their piece, using the sprite work from the game to design a pixelated take on the Genetic Apex series. To really sell the look, Deikar went so far as to include the timer used to indicate how long players have to wait to rip open a new pack.

Pokémon TCG Pocket Is Making An Impact

It's Quite A Nifty Little Game

The pre-release excitement surrounding Pocket clearly paid off as the app has been a resounding success since its launch in late October. The game has racked up 30 million downloads worldwide, a success that was likely fueled by the fact that it's free-to-play and serves as a streamlined adaptation of the beloved tabletop game. Despite its massive player base, the community agrees that there are a few problems that need to be ironed out if Pocket wants to make a lasting impression.

The biggest issue comes down to its monetization which many have argued is overwhelming. There are several currencies needed to make any kind of progress with one's card collection and while Pocket is generous up front, players quickly generate less and less resources, pushing them to spend real money or sign up for the Premium Membership. There's also the problem of turn order as going first in a game is considered to be a major disadvantage due to the lack of available options.

Pokémon TCG Pocket is Great

But You Can't Forget About The Greats

Mew next to the Mew Card from Pokemon TCG Pocket

It's safe to say that Pokémon TCG Pocket wouldn't exist today were it not for the legacy of Pokémon TCG on the Game Boy Color. I recently played it thanks to the version available on Nintendo Switch Online and it's aged remarkably well. For those looking to take a break from Pocket's grind, it could be the alternative you need.
