Pokémon Ultra Eclipse Is Taking Players Back To Alola, All Thanks To The Fans

Easily one of Pokémon's most beloved entries, Pokémon Sun & Moon first launched for the Nintendo 3DS back in 2016 and quickly became a fan favorite. Taking players to the Hawaii-inspired Alola region for the first time, the Gen 7 games shook up the series' long-standing formula with a wealth of fresh ideas.

On top of introducing a completely unique island region with Alola, Sun & Moon replaced the traditional Gym Battles with Island Trials and Totem Pokémon encounters, while Hidden Machines were retired in favor of the convenient Poké Ride system, and powerful once-per-battle Z-Moves added a new layer of strategy to combat.

The games also introduced Alolan Forms, giving classic Pokémon entirely new types, abilities, and appearances to reflect the region's unique environments. Add in features like the Rotom Pokédex, SOS Battles that could call wild Pokémon for backup, and a remarkable story-driven adventure, and it's easy to see why so many fans still hold Sun & Moon in such high regard nearly a decade later.

And now, thanks to a fan-created ROM Hack "Demake" from Phaneropterinae on Reddit, players will be able to revisit the tropical paradise of Alola once again in Pokémon Ultra Eclipse.

Pokémon Ultra Eclipse Is By Fans, For Fans

If the words "fan-created ROM Hack Demake" sound like gibberish to you, you're probably not alone. Essentially, Pokémon Ultra Eclipse is a fan-made project that rebuilds Pokémon Sun & Moon using the classic Game Boy Advance engine from Pokémon Emerald. That means players get to revisit the Alola region with nostalgic pixel-art visuals and old-school gameplay, while still experiencing many of the characters, locations, Pokémon, and mechanics that made the original Nintendo 3DS games so memorable.

While Ultra Eclipse is still in development, the scope of the project is impressive. Rather than simply porting Alola onto older hardware, developer Phaneropterinae is recreating the region inside the Pokémon Emerald engine using the modern "pokeemerald-expansion framework," supporting mechanics far beyond what the original Game Boy Advance games were capable of.

The project aims to preserve the feel of Sun & Moon while adding quality-of-life features such as a redesigned Bag interface, skippable cutscenes, and numerous engine improvements. Early previews have also showcased faithfully recreated Alolan towns, routes, and overworld maps rendered in GBA-style pixel art, alongside custom sprites and updated battle systems.

Thanks to the underlying expansion engine, Ultra Eclipse can also support modern Pokémon mechanics like Fairy-type Pokémon, physical/special move splits, Z-Moves, Mega Evolution, updated abilities and moves, and Pokémon from later generations, making it much more involved than a straightforward visual demake.

When Does Pokémon Ultra Eclipse Release?

While the project is well into development, Phaneropterinae has not provided a specific release date and maintains that, since it's a work in progress, "none of the content in the video is final and is subject to change." Because Ultra Eclipse is built as a Game Boy Advance ROM hack of Pokémon Emerald, once completed, players will be able to play it on virtually any device capable of running GBA games, including PCs, smartphones, handheld emulators, and even original Game Boy Advance hardware via a flash cartridge.
