James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.
The Pokémon Legends duology has actually been a breath of fresh air for the franchise as a whole, even if both games did have areas that can be improved upon. They've also seemingly been successful enough for the developer, and the not-a-spin-off spin-off is seemingly here to stay for the foreseeable future.
The first step in Pokémon's tenth generation has already been confirmed as Winds and Waves, but we know next to nothing about what comes next for Legends. That said, there is the age-old well of rumors to return to, and with information coming out all the time, we might have some of what the developer plans to do next.
Over on Twitter/X, the user Centro LEAKS shared a post detailing rumors around Game Freak's plans for the tenth generation, including a "new Legends game set in the past." This chimes very well with an existing portion of the infamous Teraleak that suggested a very early pitch for Pokémon Legends 3 put forward the idea of setting the game in Galar, 1000 years in the past.
Over on Reddit, fans reacted to the potential of the idea, and many felt it had more than enough legs to be made into a full game. "This game has a better chance than Unova IMO. Sword and Shield broke sales records during its release timeframe. Although I’d like to see a Unova Legends," one comment read.
"OK, this one sounds more interesting than Edo Period Johto. Galar had such an interesting background that was completely wasted on a very thin and basic story," another added.
While a third said, "I want them to get really weird with this title. Galar already has some really fantastical architecture and environments with the Glimwood Tangle, Hammerlocke, and Motostoke. I want to see them go as far into the traditional medieval fantasy elements as they can.1000 years also allows complete creative freedom in terms of new Pokémon.
"It looks like there’s already a new split evo for Galarian Slowpoke in this concept art which is already unlike anything we’ve seen before. The potential with this project is absolutely insane."
Whatever Game Freak does decide to do with the next Pokémon Legends game, it's clear that the idea of setting it in the past is very popular with existing players. We also know that concepts like Ancient Mew have fascinated fans in the past, so there's little reason to think something similar can't work again here.
