Set to be Game Freak's most ambitious Pokémon game yet, one upcoming open-world, region-hopping title is expected to combat the issues plaguing previous installments as well as offer fans what they have been craving since the franchise's inception.
In leaks shared over the past few months, we have already had a glimpse into Game Freak's plans for the Pokémon franchise, with a roadmap taking us up to 2030. As such, we know that Gen 10's map could be the biggest yet and with Pokémon Day 2026 set to arrive soon, it will not be long before we (officially) discover what we can expect next from the monster-catching franchise.
However, before then, fans are already anticipating Pokémon Project Seed, a major release which could arrive as early as 2029.
What Is Pokémon Project Seed?
Shared to r/GamingLeaksAndRumours just four months ago, Pokémon Project Seed is perhaps the most exciting out of the recent Pokémon leaks as it promises a "multi-region" map with the objective being for our protagonist to be able to walk from Sinnoh to Hoenn, as well as a look at a new-and-improved Kitakami.
With aims to replicate the success of previous installments such as 2009's Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver, it is clear that GameFreak wants to push the boundaries of an open-world Pokémon entry, giving us a map that will rival any we have seen before.
That is something that will undoubtedly be appreciated by fans, with many criticisms surrounding the most recent Pokémon entries centering around the lack of diversity in the so-called "open-worlds". However, it remains to be seen if such a large map will be too ambitious.
According to leaks, Pokémon Project Seed is set to launch in 2029/2030, so there will be plenty of time for its developers to nail it.
This Sounds Like The Dream Pokémon Game
It is worth noting that, at the time of writing, Pokémon Project Seed is merely a rumour and leak and has not been officially confirmed or announced by Game Freak. However, there is no denying that it sounds like the ideal Pokémon game, especially now that we have next-generation capabilities thanks to the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2.
Not only that, but with the most recent Pokémon entry, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, leaving a lot to be desired, titles such as Pokémon Project Seed could very well save the franchise.
However, not much else is known about Pokémon Project Seed outside its vast map, but it is the ability to region-hop that has got fans excited. It will allow regions such as Sinnoh to be vastly extended upon and, thanks to improved hardware, I can only imagine how they will look.
That being said, these plans are extremely ambitious, and I only hope that GameFreak is not biting off more than it can chew and still manages to maintain the heart of the Pokémon franchise whilst extending it to much-loved locations in the meantime.
I guess only time will tell.
