Pokémon Crystal Makes Long-Awaited Return After 26 Years

Released internationally in 2001, Pokémon Crystal served as an enhanced version of 1999 titles Pokémon Gold and Silver. Launched for the Game Boy Color, Crystal marked the final installment in Pokémon's Gen 2, introducing several new features including the ability to play as a female protagonist for the first time.

Despite remaining one of the lowest-selling Pokémon games of all time, it is still remembered fondly and is regarded as one of the greatest video games of all time, and thanks to incorporating features that would become must-haves for future iterations, it still receives praise to this day, especially with the added nostalgia factor.

Pokémon Crystal Is Back

Nostalgia is exactly the feeling that will be bringing legions of fans to the brand-new PC port for Pokémon Crystal. Created by bryantheboi over on GitHub, this marks the collection of Generation 2 PC ports being released over two decades on from the game's original Game Boy Color launch.

Luckily, we can now see this port in action thanks to a video created by YouTuber Video Game Esoterica in a 10-minute showcase.

"Everyone loves Nintendo PC ports and recomps, and since we haven't really gotten any new Pokémon game news recently, let's talk about a recently released Pokémon Red recomp...and the new addition of a Pokémon Blue recomp...and a Pokémon Yellow recomp/Pokémon Yellow PC port!" The video description reads, highlighting just some of the PC ports that have been released so far.

"And now, Pokémon Gen 2 PC ports are here with a Pokémon Crystal PC port from Briantheboi after the Pokémon Gold PC port! It's out now, and you can play it today!"

Fans Are Loving the New Addition

Featuring the game we all know and love, yet now accessible on the PC for modern audiences, Pokémon Crystal is back and bigger than ever, and according to these YouTube comments, it is greatly appreciated.

"This port makes it crystal clear that Pokèmon fans will port everything to PC!" One comment reads. Another said, "Oof, Gen 2 was my absolute favorite as a kid. I had Gold, and it just blew my mind how big the game was and how much it utilized that internal clock. Never played Crystal before, but I hear it's an improved version of Gold/Silver. I'm definitely down for trying this recomp!"
