PlayStation Plus apparently played a major role in Sony’s success during the last fiscal year, a promising sign for the company after it decided to increase the subscription service’s pricing in May despite criticism.

Sony Group’s latest annual report, filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), provides a more detailed view of the company’s outlook on PlayStation Plus and the value it sees in the service. In the filing, the company said the subscription service is a key driver of recurring revenue and engagement in the PlayStation ecosystem, and it plans to improve the subscription offering going forward.

As part of the goal, Sony intends to “drive profitable growth of PS Plus” by improving the service proposition and constantly improving the content offered to subscribers. It also wants to encourage more users to upgrade to higher-tier memberships, hinting that PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium will receive more focus and investment in the road ahead.

"Sony is focused on driving profitable growth of PS Plus by increasing user engagement and continuously improving its service proposition and content, as well as inviting users to shift to higher tiers."

The report comes just weeks after the company announced an increase to PlayStation Plus prices in several regions, a move that prompted backlash from subscribers who questioned whether the service was worth the added expense. Sony didn’t outline any planned new features in the filing, but its commitment to improving PlayStation Plus suggests subscribers can expect continued investment in content and perks across the service’s tiers.

At the time of writing, PlayStation Plus operates on three tiers:

  • Essential: $10.99 per month
  • Extra: $16.99 per month
  • Premium/Deluxe: $19.99 per month
PS Plus subscription tiers (1)

The Essential tier is the most affordable way to get the full PlayStation experience, as it unlocks online multiplayer alongside perks like monthly games, exclusive discounts, cloud storage, and Share Play. However, if you’re willing to pay a bit more, the Extra and Premium tiers add access to a massive library of games, Ubisoft+ Classics, game trials, and other bonus features on top of the standard benefits.

It’s not hard to see why Sony would want to drive more subscribers to these higher-priced plans. After all, PlayStation Plus isn’t just an online multiplayer subscription service anymore. It’s now one of the biggest pillars of Sony’s gaming business, bringing in recurring revenue and keeping players engaged with the console ecosystem through free games, discounts, and cloud-based features.

Some of us may argue that the price hike isn’t justified by the current lineup of benefits, but Sony’s comments appear to suggest that it believes additional investment in the service will help strengthen its value proposition over time. Will that translate to larger game catalogs, more day-one additions, expanded cloud gaming features, or other perks? Well, that’s something to be seen.

For now, Sony hasn’t shared any concrete details on how it intends to make the higher-priced tiers better. After all, adding more value for the price is one of the best ways to drive engagement and convince players to invest more in their console experiences. Unfortunately, considering the current economy, it’s pretty hard to get gamers to spend more on video games, so it definitely isn’t an easy task.

However, one thing is pretty clear: PlayStation Plus remains a major priority for Sony’s gaming vertical going forward, potentially even more than hardware sales.
