Earlier today, PlayStation announced that it will stop producing and manufacturing new physical video game discs starting in January 2028. Reaction to this online has been very, very negative. And it doesn’t matter where you look; Sony is getting yelled at everywhere online by angry fans and players.
For example, the official Sony account on Twitter posted a simple tweet teasing the upcoming release of the next Spider-Man movie with a single spider emoji. Normally, this account gets a few hundred replies at most, but the Spider-Man tweet now has over 3,000 replies, and most of them are from people yelling at Sony for killing PlayStation game discs.

Similarly, over on the official PlayStation Instagram account where most posts get around 200 to 300 replies, the most recent video shared by the company has amassed over 2,000 comments. And once again, most of them are very angry about PlayStation abandoning physical media, begging the company to reconsider, or threatening to boycott future Sony products and games if it doesn’t.
The most recent video on the PlayStation YouTube account, a trailer for a World of Tanks update, has over 300 comments, most of them yelling at Sony over the news. Usually these videos, outside of the biggest trailers, get less than 50 comments.
Here is a sampling of some of the comments you can find everywhere Sony posts:
“The PS5 will be my last PlayStation. Your decision to discontinue support for physical media and likely make the next console digital-only makes no sense to me, and I see no reason to continue supporting PlayStation.”
“Man, fix your PlayStation department fuck all that Spider-Man shit.”
“I am no longer considering upgrading to a PS5 Pro since Sony will no longer be making physical games.”
“Sony, I’m pretty pissed right now. What is this ‘no CD’ future for video games?”
“I’m convinced that the PlayStation 5 was my last console. No physical media means no control over what I own, this is a great shame to Sony.”
Things are just as bad on the PlayStation Blog. A new post announcing the latest collection of free games for PS Plus subscribers has nearly 30 comments. They’re a mix, with some people calling out the selection of titles as poor and some condemning Sony’s decision to end physical games.
The same is true of Sony’s most recent TikTok video featuring Grand Theft Auto 6, a game that is also skipping a physical release. The comments there are a mix of anger about the “psysical” version of GTA 6 being just a code in a box and newer comments yelling at Sony over its recent announcement. It’s the same story over on PlayStation’s Facebook page, where the most recent post is filled with people pledging to end their support for the company.
©Kotaku / TwitterPerhaps the funniest place I found someone yelling at Sony about the end of physical games was over on the Sony Pictures official Twitter account. Usually no one engages with it and its most recent post about Talladega Nights leaving theaters after a limited return only features five replies as of July 1. But the most recent response is from a user named DarkKrazyman, who replied: GOOD THING I OWN A PHYSICAL COPY THEN HUH!!??
Damn, Sony can’t get away from (completely understandable) online bullying from its angry customers and fans no matter where it posts. Seems people don’t like it when you tell them that in the near future they won’t really own the games they buy anymore and won’t have any other option. Who’d have thunk?
