Jared is a writer, editor, and Communications Studies graduate who loves popular nerd culture (almost anything to do with Marvel, DC, Star Wars, or The Lord of the Rings) and the interactive storytelling medium. Jared's first console was the PS1, wherein he fell for Spider-Man, Spyro the Dragon, and Crash Bandicoot.
Now that it has almost been the same stretch of time between the release of the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 as it has been since the PS5 was released, it is only natural that fans are itching to hear more about the PlayStation 6. Unlike Xbox’s Project Helix, the PS6 has not been formally teased or announced, though it seems as if next-generation hardware is looming fairly closely.
For instance, many of the most highly anticipated PlayStation games, such as Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Marvel’s Wolverine, and whatever Santa Monica’s still-unannounced new game is, would make for phenomenal PS6 launch titles. However, some fans may not be as ready for the PS6 to launch as they would like to be, as it is likely to dent their wallets more severely than they’d think.
Consoles are becoming exponentially more expensive via the PlayStation price spikes that have struck recently, and gamers on Reddit are lamenting about how much the PS6 will cost when it eventually goes to market, especially considering how expensive PS5 Pros are now. As user cardrealm states, “PlayStation 6 at $1,000 feels like a matter of ‘when.’”
Every year that passes without the PS6’s release suggests that its retail price could continue to climb higher, adjusting for inflation; therefore, this fear is not unfounded. Still, many fans are not as skeptical or cynical, with the widely agreeable price of $699 being a lot of users’ estimate regarding how much it will cost at launch, even if the price of next-gen hardware is exceptionally high.
Interestingly, user rocademiks suggests that gamers should simply begin saving up for however much it might be and begrudgingly surrender to an exorbitant price tag. Whether or not someone could afford a $1,000 PS6, though, is less of a factor than fans wanting to spend that much on a console in the first place (especially if PlayStation fans feel like they have barely gotten their money’s worth out of the PS5).
User Apprehensive_Mud9597’s concerns lie elsewhere: “I’m more worried about the games. This generation has been 99% remakes and sequels. Sony seems too dependent on those.” Tangentially, if games begin costing upwards of $100, like Grand Theft Auto 6’s loosely speculated price, it will be quickly thrown into perspective how costly a $1,000 console is.
It is difficult to predict how much the PS6 might cost when it is released, and there may be no sensible way for players to steel themselves for the answer, whenever it is officially revealed. Meanwhile, PS5 users can at least make the most out of 2026 by ending the year with massive blockbusters like Marvel’s Wolverine and Grand Theft Auto 6 before the PlayStation 6 is on the horizon.
