Digital games have become increasingly popular over the past few years and have completely overtaken physical editions. So much so that Sony has reported that physical game sales have become such a small portion of its profits that it has decided to terminate disc production for PlayStation.

Fans were not happy about this decision, as many enjoy collecting physical games or would like to be given the choice to resell their games in the future. Despite acknowledging these concerns, Sony has stated that it is not backing down and that it is moving forward with its decision to halt disc production starting in Jan. 2028.

The community is organizing a boycott at the end of August in a final attempt to reverse Sony's decision, but at this point, it seems there is nothing left to be done. If players visit the digital PlayStation store and attempt to purchase the disc edition of the PS5, they will notice that it has a warning text on the side regarding disc discontinuation. And, according to a picture shared by a gaming news account on X, it seems that the same warning is being printed on the disc-based PS5 console boxes now hitting retailers.

Fans should take this image with a grain of salt, as the information has not been verified by other sources, so the information remains unconfirmed until there are more sightings and reports of the label. The original poster claims that it is not fake and that the image was given to them by a trusted source. They have also stated that they plan to post more images of the new PS5 console box soon to prove it. Nevertheless, the image looks quite real, and the wording is the exact same as the one seen on the official PlayStation store.

Companies are taking different approaches to the rise of digital media. Sony is ending its relationship with physical discs. Xbox seems to be on the fence, as it's not clear what it intends to do in the next generation or with its disc-to-digital program. Nintendo's financial report says that, even though the number went up compared to last year, only 61.5% of its sales are digital. It is unknown how much this has been affecting video game production companies as well. For example, Capcom has reported that 90% of its sales come from digital, so the company won't be affected by the shrinking of physical sales.

Sony is either adding the labels to promote sales of the digital version of the PS5 or to avoid possible backlash from fans who are unaware of disc discontinuation (if there are still any in the world). It will be interesting to see how this label will affect sales. Will the digital PS5 do even better? Will digital game sales rise faster? Or will this fuel players to boycott the company altogether, stopping them from making any type of purchases? Only time will tell.
