Apple has announced a new generative AI editing tool for Pixelmator Pro. Called Generate Fill, it’s part of a broader update to the company’s Apple Creator Studio suite.

Generate Fill essentially functions like Adobe Photoshop’s similarly named Generative Fill. Users can circle an area they want to change or make a more precise selection using Pixelmator Pro’s existing Free Selection, Quick Selection or Magnetic Selection tools, then enter a description of the desired edit. Apple says Generate Fill matches the lighting, perspective and texture of the surrounding image to help the generated content blend in.

Users can merge generated elements into existing layers or add them as new layers with masks, allowing them to refine the results afterward. Apple hasn’t identified the AI model powering Generate Fill or detailed whether processing happens on-device or in the cloud. Apple also says that the tool incorporates the app’s Super Resolution feature to upscale generated content.

The update also brings closer integration with Apple’s video apps. Final Cut Pro users will be able to open an image from their timeline directly in Pixelmator Pro and save changes back to the project automatically, without reimporting it.

The updates will be free for existing Apple Creator Studio subscribers. In the US, the suite costs $13 per month or $129 per year, with education pricing of $3 per month or $30 per year for eligible college students and educators.

Pixelmator Pro remains available as a $50 one-time purchase for Mac, but Apple’s announcement doesn’t clarify whether that version will receive Generate Fill. The company says the feature will be available in November, but did not specify an exact date.
