If you wanted to buy a physical copy of Grand Theft Auto VI at launch, beware. The box will only come with a download code and not a disc, Rockstar Games confirmed on Tuesday. That small detail arrives after months of speculation about how the studio would combat leaks ahead of the release of the most anticipated video game in recent history.
“The physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI, containing a download code inside the box, will be available starting November 12, 2026 to support pre-loading,” confirmed a new press release from parent company Take-Two. The good news is that means anyone can walk into their local Walmart or GameStop and buy a code to immediately start pre-loading the game before its November 19 release.
The bad news is that anyone who wants an actual disc version of the biggest game in over a decade is going to have to wait and buy it a second time. With GTA VI launching at $80 for the base version, that means hardcore fans will have to shell out at least $160. That’s certainly one way to double-dip.
It’s also a way to avoid any major leaks, something that’s no doubt top of mind for the developers at Rockstar. The company suffered an unprecedented hack a couple of years ago that led to the release of in-development game footage well ahead of official trailers. And we’ve also seen tons of big games break street dates and end up in the hands of fans days or even weeks ahead of their actual launch.
But the code in the box approach also appears to contradict an early statement from Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick. Asked about online rumors that Rockstar might delay the release of physical copies of GTA VI until 2027 in order to avoid leaks, the executive responded, “That’s not the plan.”
Well, plans change, I guess. Or maybe he’s counting an empty box as a “physical” version. Skipping discs at launch will also make the game slightly cheaper to manufacture and ship to storefronts. GTA VI will launch with a $100 Ultimate Edition that comes with bonus rewards and a free month of GTA+.
