The long-promised Phasmophobia Tanglewood update is live today, bringing spooky secrets to one of the game's oldest maps.
Besides receiving an obvious visual upgrade, Phasmophobia's overhaul of 6 Tanglewood Drive comes with a whole host of new features to discover. Wander through the worn halls of the small house to uncover brand-new paranormal interactions, spooky new sound effects, and a new interactive element hidden in the dark recesses of the basement.
The update also adds some lore to the haunted house by scattering clues to its history around its rooms and new clutter. The modern, uncanny valley house is replaced by a much older, more storied location. Despite all these changes, developer Kinetic Games has kept one aspect of the map unchanged: its layout.
Tanglewood Drive Gets Complete Visual Overhaul
Long-Time Fans Will Notice A Few Other Changes
The Tanglewood house is one of the most beloved locations in Phasmophobia. The one-story, one-basement home is small enough that beginners can tackle it, but large enough that veteran ghost hunters can find challenge in it.
Because of this, Kinetic Games was very careful not to change too much about the house's layout. “Our community knows this map inside out, so we wanted to approach the rework very carefully,” says Corey Dixon, Art Director at Kinetic Games. "Ultimately, the update is to implement improvements to game visuals and gameplay, while deepening the eerie atmosphere and narrative. It’s the same Tanglewood we know and love, but with better, spookier elements."
In other words, fans who were worried about a huge change can rest easy: The overall architecture of 6 Tanglewood Drive has remained more or less the same.
Layout Changes May Also Change How You Play
No More Kitchen Island Looping
Of course, the update has implemented plenty of changes to the small house, like furniture placement and the dimensions of some spaces. These shifts may force players to rethink their survival strategy.
The purpose of some rooms has been altered to reflect the house's older former occupant, like the blue boy's room turning into a granny's hobby room. You may have to spend some time getting to know the new layout and all the best hiding spots all over again. On the bright side, the slats of all the closets now allow you to peek out into the room without the ghosts seeing you.
The kitchen island has also been removed, eliminating one of the most commonly used looping spots in the house. This may pose a problem, but there's good news, too: the basement now has an interactive model train on a table that serves as the perfect looping replacement.
The Tanglewood Drive revamp is the latest in a series of free updates to the cooperative ghost-hunting horror game from Kinetic Games. The team's next project is an upgrade of 13 Willow Street and the long-awaited character player upgrade.
The update is available today across all platforms. This and the upcoming reworks take Phasmophobia ever closer to its full release out of Early Access as Version 1.0.
