'Persona 5' And More Iconic Games Will Dominate The Next Season Of Fortnite

Everything from Persona 5 to a viral Roblox game will collaborate with Fortnite for its Override season

The first trailer for Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4: Override was released and confirmed that it's the massive gaming crossover bonanza that leak suggested it would be.

Mixing cinematics and gameplay, the trailer follows Jonesy as he explores an island full of video game-inspired characters and locales. I spotted Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails, Dr. Eggman, Joker from Persona 5, Mega Man, Scorpion, Raiden, Kitana, and The Deer from Roblox's 99 Nights in the Forest.

Key art subsequently released on X also featured Pac-Man, Blanka and Ryu from Street Fighter, Geralt of Rivia from The Witcher, Lara Croft from Tomb Raider, Master Chief from Halo, Rush from Mega Man, and Sora from Kingdom Hearts. Funnily enough, a character named Geno is also an important villain in the next season's narrative, although he's an original Fortnite character and not one from Super Mario RPG.

The gaming influence also extends into gameplay. We see Jonesy chase a 1-Up coin for most of the trailer, running like Sonic through a Green Hill Zone-themed area of the battle royale map, using Mega Man's Mega Blaster, and dodging some falling Tetris blocks from the sky.

Override being themed around what Fortnite calls "Gaming Legends" has been one of the worst-kept secrets within the battle royale's community for some time. This past week, key art featuring characters like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro leaked, and a Sonic the Hedgehog crossover comic was released early. Even before that, teasers for the new season confirmed that characters from games like Persona 5 and Pac-Man would be involved with Override. Leaks also referenced Kingdom Hearts, and that turned out to be true too.

Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4: Override will begin on Aug. 20. While that's still a few days away, Disney and Epic Games added the Smuggler's Gambit island to Fortnite today. That island is based on the Smuggler's Run ride at Galaxy's Edge, and lets players complete odd jobs for Hondo at the Mersa Vera Station.

Clearly, the next couple of months of Fortnite will be all about pop culture crossovers, even more so than usual.
