DC Studios and Max finally released a new trailer for Peacemaker season two, starring the newly minted 17-time WWE world heavyweight champion and actor John Cena.
The hanging question with Peacemaker‘s sophomore effort is how Gunn’s new season would address its limbo status in the DC universe. The final moments of the first season saw its titular antihero share the screen with Justice League‘s Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, and Aquaman. To be fair, the former duo were only silhouettes of the heroes, while the latter two saw Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller don their hero Spandex. Obviously, things are gonna be a bit different now for its titular trash-talking heroes, seeing as how Gunn’s Superman film stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent instead of the DCEU’s Henry Cavill.
While what will stay and what will carry over from the first season is up in the air, what isn’t up for debate is how Gunn’s other DC shows will integrate with Peacemaker. Most notably, that includes Frank Grillo reprising his role as Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos, bringing with him a deep grudge against Peacemaker for the death of his son in The Suicide Squad.
We got a sneak peek of Flag Sr. hunting down Peacemaker and friends when Cena made a surprise appearance on Inside the NBA. While the moment was a pretty overt display of brand synchronicity between the Warner Bros. shows, it did result in Shaquille O’Neal and his fellow show hosts donning Peacemaker helmets, an impromptu interview where Cena politely asked if he could swear, and an even more impromptu “wrassling” match between Shaq and Charles Barkley so its hard to fault them for the bit.
The first season of Peacemaker dropped back in January 2022. In io9’s review for season one, we likened the show to a sinister palette-swap of Guardians of the Galaxy, writing, “Peacemaker manages to work and sell its absurd slice of the DC Universe” and “Gunn puts a lot of foolishness and heart on display. But there’s also certainly something darker just waiting to make itself known.”
Peacemaker season two premieres on Max August 21.
