Zoë's love of superheroes and all things Marvel & DC started out in childhood, and has blossomed into a career getting to talk about some of the biggest and best movies and shows of all time, having previously focused on comics while working at WhatCulture.

One of the most famous dancing movies of all time has reached a considerable milestone as of today, with the film growing ever closer to the fifty-year-old mark as time goes on. While it's often an underappreciated corner of the world of cinema, movies about dancing have historically had some stellar results, as can be evidenced by the range of different successful films that cover this territory.

Of course, though some of the first movies of this genre that will come to mind are solid candidates, like Singin' in the Rain, West Side Story, and Billy Elliot, there's also lots more to consider in this subcategory of film. For example, although it's focally a horror movie, Black Swan does feature dancing as a prominent part of its story, showing that there can be far more to a film that centers around the topic than simply some funky moves.

However, eye-catching dance sequences and moves certainly don't hurt things, as almost all of the biggest dance movies of all time have some major moments of both - as is evidenced by one of Patrick Swayze's most famous movies, which celebrates its anniversary today as the franchise awaits the next sequel on the horizon.

Dirty Dancing Turns 39 Years Old Today

Dirty Dance

Having first released on August 21 all the way back in 1987, Dirty Dancing turns 39 years old today, marking a notable number of years since its debut, and underscoring the legacy the film has managed to leave behind, given it's still a relatively well-known movie for a variety of reasons even as time moves further and further away from its debut.

As the name may suggest, Dirty Dancing focuses around the topic of dancing, both in terms of central character Baby's relationship with Johnny, a dance instructor, and in terms of the two ending up as dance partners after Baby offers to stand in for Johnny's usual dance performance partner Penny.

The movie was a hit with audiences back in the 80s for its dramatic and emotional story, as well as some song choices that worked well with the dance sequences. That said, it's still well-known today, and the film still plays a core role in the continued popularity of the song "(I've Had) The Time Of My Life", which was made for the movie, and plays during its iconic ending lift scene.

Dirty Dancing Turning Almost 40 Makes Its Upcoming Sequel Even More Interesting

The success of the 1987 Dirty Dancing spawned a far bigger franchise over the years, including a TV show of the same name which ran from 1988-1989, a 2004 sequel, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, and a 2017 straight-to-television sequel, though this final addition saw a more divisive response with audiences.

Now that the original film is almost 40 years old, there's plenty of room to reimagine the world and story in new ways, as appears to be the intention with the upcoming currently unnamed Dirty Dancing sequel, which has been in the works since at least back in August 2020, when it was originally confirmed to be a direct follow on from the original Dirty Dancing movie.

With the Dirty Dancing sequel still reportedly being in development as of 2026, it seems we may still have another chapter of the franchise on the horizon that follows on from the 1987 story, which is both something that's sure to be a delight for fans of movies centered around dancing, and something that makes the wider Dirty Dancing story one of the more longer-lasting in the world of cinema, as it will have spanned almost half a century if and when the sequel does in fact release.
