Warning! This article contains spoilers for Paddington in Peru.
Paddington in Peru ends the trilogy with a story filled with the same heart and laughs as its predecessors, with no shortage of big twists. Rather than being set in London, this time around, Paddington in Peru switches filming locations to, well, Peru, the lovable bear's home country. The story centers around the search for Paddington's Aunt Lucy, who goes missing from the Home for Retired Bears. By following what is considered one of the best movies of all time in Paddington 2, Paddington in Peru had a lot of pressure on its shoulders.
While maybe not reaching the heights of its predecessor, the story proves itself as a worthy one by the time of Paddington in Peru's ending. Not only does the film contain the same emotional and comedic core as the first two, but Paddington in Peru's story also has its own share of twists and turns in the final act. From several reveals concerning the film's villains to the exploration of mythological tales and even some set-up for Paddington 4, Paddington in Peru's ending has a lot to explore.
Does Paddington Find Aunt Lucy In Paddington In Peru’s Ending?
Aunt Lucy Inadvertently Forced Paddington On A Trip Through The Amazon
As alluded to, Paddington in Peru's story centers around Aunt Lucy's disappearance, forcing the young bear and his found family, the Browns, to travel to South America. Once there, the family enlists the help of Antonia Banderas' Hunter Cabot, a man who comes from a long line of treasure hunters. While the change of scenery and longer runtime may have contributed to Paddington in Peru's reviews being marginally more divisive than those of its predecessors, the film never loses sight of its heartfelt story as its ending focuses on Aunt Lucy's relationship with Paddington.

Why Paddington In Peru's Reviews Are Much More Divided Than Paddington 2

After a series of trials and tribulations involving Paddington in Peru's more mythical aspects, the young bear eventually reunites with his Aunt. Paddington In Peru’s Mythological Connections: Do The Browns Find El Dorado?
Paddington 3's Story Goes Deeper Than One Might Expect
At first, Paddington in Peru's story is positioned as a simple search for a lost relative. However, the introduction of Hunter Cabot gives the film a deeper plot that surrounds the mythological lost city of El Dorado. Hunter Cabot's treasure-hunting family tree reveals that the key to finding El Dorado supposedly surrounds a bear, which Hunter takes to mean Paddington, given the latter's bracelet that is depicted in history books relating to the fabled lost city of gold.
The entire cast of the Brown family returns for Paddington in Peru save for Sally Hawkins, who is replaced by Emily Mortimer as Mary Brown.
Eventually, the Browns and Hunter Cabot deduce that Aunt Lucy went searching for El Dorado, aligning their interests to find the gold and Paddington's lost relative. As Paddington in Peru nears its ending, El Dorado is found, only not as one might expect. Instead of a lost city filled with gold and jewels, El Dorado's treasure is a trove of perfectly ripe oranges, perfect for making marmalade for the hidden tribe of bears it also houses. Aunt Lucy found El Dorado as she knew Paddington would subsequently find her there, thus discovering his ancestral history.
Paddington's True Family Lineage Is Revealed In Paddington In Peru
Paddington Was Never Orphaned, Only Lost
In Paddington in Peru's ending, Aunt Lucy reveals that her bracelet that was the key to finding El Dorado was originally Paddington's and that it was tied around his leg when she and Uncle Pastuzo found him as a cub. The reason for this is that Paddington was born in El Dorado before being lost. The bracelet is how he would find his way back home, something that Aunt Lucy figured out. As a means of helping him find his true home, Aunt Lucy went looking and hoped Paddington would find her, as he did in Paddington in Peru's ending.
Paddington’s Final Choice & Paddington 4 Set-Up Explained
Paddington's Notions Of Home Were Tested
The reveal that Paddington was born in El Dorado gives the bear a difficult choice to make in Paddington in Peru's ending. Paddington must decide whether to stay with his species or return to London with the Browns, who gave him a new home away from Peru. After careful thought, Paddington decides to go back to London as, despite finding out where he is from, he knows that the Brown family is where he now belongs.
Paddington 4 was confirmed by Studio Canal recently, as was as a TV series based on the character.
Interestingly, this sets up the story of the recently announced Paddington 4. In the final sequence of Paddington in Peru, the bears from El Dorado come to visit the Browns in London. This could set up a story in which Paddington helps the other bears acclimatize to life in England, bringing with it all the mischief, mayhem, and heartwarming themes that have become synonymous with the Paddington movies.
Paddington In Peru’s Big Villain Twist Explained
Who Was The Final Villain Of Paddington In Peru?
In the marketing for Paddington in Peru, the film did not necessarily make it clear who the villain of the story was. Of course, this was likely due to the fact that topping Paddington 2's career-altering Hugh Grant villain was going to be incredibly difficult. Nonetheless, Paddington in Peru has a villain: Hunter Cabot. It is revealed that Hunter's treasure-hunting roots give him a gold sickness, with the ghosts of his ancestors pushing him to forego his friendship with Paddington and the Browns, and even his relationship with his daughter, to find El Dorado at all costs.
It is revealed that Olivia Colman's seemingly benevolent nun from the Home for Retired Bears is actually the cousin of Hunter Cabot and also suffers from gold sickness...
This leads Hunter Cabot into direct confrontation with Paddington and the Browns, yet another villain twist awaits in Paddington in Peru's ending. It is revealed that Olivia Colman's seemingly benevolent nun from the Home for Retired Bears is actually the cousin of Hunter Cabot and also suffers from gold sickness. She threatens the Browns, Paddington, and Hunter's daughter, Gina, snapping Hunter out of his craze so that he can defeat her. Hunter then leaves with Gina as the Browns enter El Dorado and The Reverend Mother is relocated to the icy Home for Retired Polar Bears.
The Real Meaning Of Paddington In Peru’s Ending
As is the case with the ending of all Paddington movies, Paddington in Peru's ending has a heartwarming message at its center. The film reaffirms its predecessors' core themes of being kind at all costs and finding a home in a family of different people but furthers these by adding the message that home is not always just one place. Paddington in Peru delivers the message that home can be anywhere, in any country, so long as it is filled with people who love and care for you, as the titular bear discovers.
