A sequel to The Godfather is in the works more than five decades after the original masterpiece was released.
However, the new instalment will differ significantly from director Francis Ford Coppola's trilogy.
The sequel will feature a female-driven narrative centered around the character of Connie Corleone, the only daughter of Vito Corleone, famously played by Marlon Brando in the first movie.
It will be based on the upcoming novel Connie, written by best-selling Italian American author Adriana Trigiani and officially authorized by the estate of original Godfather author Mario Puzo.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Random House won an eight-way auction for Connie, which is due to be published in the fall of 2027.
Paramount is handling the film, although there's no word on casting or production just yet.

However, a rep for Coppola says that it's 'unlikely' he will return to direct Connie despite helming the first three films.
Even if Coppola wanted to direct the sequel, it's doubtful that any studio would trust him with big budget IP like The Godfather after 2024's Megalopolis.
The sci-fi epic, which was a passion project for Coppola, was savaged by critics and lost around $100million after tanking at the box office.
There's also no word yet on whether Al Pacino, now 86, or Talia Shire, who portrayed Connie in the first three films, will be back.
The rest of the original Godfather cast have since passed away.
Diane Keaton, who played Kay, died last October at age 79 of bacterial pneumonia, followed by Robert Duvall, who played Tom, in February from old age. He was 95.
Fans have reacted negatively to news of a fourth film, with one commenting, 'Look, I love the original trilogy as much as anyone, but please... just let it sleep with the fishes.'
Another wrote, 'Well, knowing Hollywood, we’ll probably have a Chinese Vito Corleone.'

A third commented, 'Please god no, they will turn it into modern crap and make it woke. Leave it alone.'
Released in 1972, the original Godfather film is one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful movies of all time.
It grossed over $250million off a $6million budget and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, ultimately taking home Best Picture, Best Actor (for Brando), and Best Adapted Screenplay (for Puzo and Coppola).
It is regularly regarded as the greatest American film of all time.
The Godfather Part II, released in 1974, was similarly successful. Despite grossing less than the first film, with around $93million, it was nominated for eleven Academy Awards and became the first sequel to win Best Picture.
Its other six Oscar wins included Best Director for Coppola and Best Supporting Actor for Robert De Niro.
The final film in the trilogy, The Godfather Part III, didn't fare quite as well. Despite being a box office hit, it received mixed reviews from critics, especially for Coppola's decision to cast his daughter Sofia in the film.
It received seven Academy Award nominations but won none of them, while Sofia earned Worst Supporting Actress and Worst New Star at the Razzies.
In 2020, Coppola released a recut version of the film titled The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone, which received better reviews.
